Windows Media Player problem

A couple of weeks ago I had some repairs done on my PC, and ended up losing everything on the hard drive. When I got it back, I had to re-install Windows Media Player. But it often doesn't work properly since then; about half the clips I play come out so pixellated they're unwatchable, especially when people in the clip are moving. What's gone wrong and how do I fix it (I didn't have any such problem before the repairs)?

If it helps, I'm using WMP 7, for Windows98.

I'm not familiar with WMP 7 or Windows98, but if there is a setting in the player to turn down acceleration, I suggest trying that. (In WMP 9, it would be under Tools-> Options -> Performance.)

Best of luck,

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried turning down the acceleration, but it made no difference.

Hmmm. I don't know if this would be a good response for you as I don't know much about windows 98 but it's worth a try.

A while ago I had some problems with my WMV due to a new video card. The moving picture came out like a photo negative. Like you, some of my saved clips were untouched while most of the others turned out crappy.

To combat this, I followed some peoples suggestions to download the newest player(that would be WMV v.10). It seemed to do the trick nicely. However, like I said before, I have virtually no knowlege of the 98 system so I don't know if it will run on your computer. I hope it does, though.

I'm having probs now with WMP-10 ... !! In the ripping of an audio CD, it will rip fine until it gets to the last 3 or 4 tracks, then freezes up and says it can't play the CD, and to turn "Error Correction" on. Well, I've looked all over the "Tools and Options" for the error correction check-box, but cannot find one.

It also tells me that the CD may be dirty, but they are brand new Memorex CD-R's.

I've tried re-installing WMP-10, but the prob still remains.

Stormy, if you never had this problem with WMP 9, I would recommend uninstalling WMP 10 then reinstalling WMP 9. Also, did these problems begin after a recent Windows Update? Both another user and I had CD burning problems that were caused by a faulty Microsoft patch.

If the problem persists, even after you clean the lens in the CD burner and check the manufacturer's website for an updated driver, you may have a hardware problem. If you can borrow an external CD burner and it works fine on your computer, then you probably need to replace yours.

Best of luck!

T.Y. Val, I was hoping you would be the one to reply. If memory serves, I do recall a recent update concerning Windows Media, but don't remember if it was for the player (duh ... perhaps I should consult "Update History"). The burners are fairly new, with up to date drivers, and I cleaned the lens just yesterday. I can only hope MS fixes this faulty patch soon, as I still can't find this "Error Correction" check box they speak of in 'Help'.

There is more info, but I will send that to you in a PM.

1. turn off computer and unplug.

2. take outside and douse with gasoline.

3. burn thoroughly.

4. plug in and reboot.

5. rinse and repeat when neccesary, or when you comp starts acting a b**ch.

🙄 how did you know? 😛

May I suggest getting a new windows? XP, or 2000? I think its getting a little old...might not be the media player at all.

It IS XP ... XP Pro to be specific ... and it never caused any probs before! The machine isn't that old either ....not even 3 years yet.

:wooha: sorry, I thought I read 98...I guess I missunderstood. 😱
