A Winter Storm is affecting the NYC area today.

Right now, heavy snow is falling. It almost sounds like a mix, with ice hitting my window.

www.weather.com says, and I quote

Several Inches will be possible by daybreak.

All told, up to 5 inches, with other types of precip, like sleet, freezing rain, and rain, are also possible.

We've had a quiet winter so far, so this is the first blast of wintry precip for us.

Well with that variety of precip you may also have some puppy dawgs and kitty cats come down....

More wintry weather is predicted on Tuesday. It looks like about 6 inches might fall that day.

The forecast has worsened greatly for NYC.

If one looks at the forecast at

www.weather.com.

The combined snowfall total for Monday, Monday night, and Tuesday, seems to add up to over a foot of snow during that period, with one to three inches expected on Monday, five to eight inches on Monday night, and another three to five inches on Tuesday.

Such makes today's storm look tame in comparison.

It looks like something big is coming.

Things continue to get worse with the forecast.

The newly posted forecast at ..

www.weather.com says.

a combined total of 18 to 24 inches of snow between Monday and Tuesday,.

With.

1 to inches Monday.

8 to 12 inches Monday night.

3 to 5 inches Tuesday

and another 1 to 3 inches Tuesday night.

If these totals actually come to pass, they will exceed what I remember to be the worst snowstorm in NYC History, the Blizzard of 1996, when 21 inches fell. I was living in Fort Lee,NJ at the time.

The boom has been lowered. I just awakened to find that a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for heavy snow, and near blizzard conditions from
Monday afternoon until Tuesday night, for 10 to 14 inches of snow.

This would be the heaviest snowfall since last year.

The forecast continues to deteriorate..

The National Weather Service has just issued a "Blizzard Watch" for NY City and Vicinity, for a

Potentially Historic Winter Storm

With snow accumulations now forecast to be anywhere from 12 to 24 inches.

As I stated previously.. the worst snowstorm I can remember in my lifetime, was the Blizzard of 1996, in January 1996, where 21 inches fell.

This storm sounds like it could be similar to the storm in 1996.

A Bilzzard Warning has just been issued for NYC and Vicinity..

For 20 to 30 inches of snow.

This blizzard, if the predictions are right, would be worse than the Blizzard of 1996.

It looks like something very major is coming.

Just heard the latest. You guys are looking at 2-3 ft. of snow between now and Tuesday with wind gusts of 50 mph. Sounds like it's gonna be a big one.

Maybe I shouldnt say this .,.because I'm not a weather forecaster, and we dont know how it's going to play out yet.. but..

In my experience.. sometimes.. when they hype it up.. it turns out to be not as bad as they say, and .. when they say we're only going to get some snow.. that is when it turns out to be bad.

Cases in point..

I can remember times when they said we would have a foot or more of snow, and only had a few inches.

The Blizzard of 1996, which was the worst storm I ever remember in my life time. the original forecast for that storm was for a snowfall of six inches. It kept snowing for 36 hours straight, and deposited 21 plus inches when I was living in NJ.

We'll see what happens, and if this storm turns out to be as devastating as they are saying it will be.

Hopefully everyone is able to stay safe up there! I also hope that storm doesn't make its way south. We southerners are perpetually unprepared for winter weather it seems like :shock2:

The snow totals listed in the forecast dont seem to make sense.. or add up to what the forecast is saying.

According to the forecast on www.weather.com.

one to three inches is forecast Monday during the day, eight to twelve inches Monday night, and one to three more inches in the daytime on Tuesday.

Said would add up to.. 10 to 18 inches.. or an average of a foot of snow or a little more.

The actual forecast in the Blizzard Warning from the NWS says anywhere from 20 to 30 inches.. or.. anywhere from just under 2 feet of snow.. to 2 and a half feet of snow.

I'm still skeptical. We'll see what the final forecast just before the snow hits is.. and what we actually get

Umm, it's just their best, educated guess. No meteorologist knows exactly how much show is going to fall, just that you're going to get "a lot" of it. Who cares about the exact totals in the forecast? You can guess a number and have just as good of a chance at being right. Anything over a few inches of snow will shut a lot down in that region.

It's starting to get windy.

I just heard that NY Mayor Bill DeBlasio said all but emergency vehicles, snow cleaning etc, are supposed to be off city roads by 7pm.

I remember the Blizzard of 1996 almost as if it were yesterday. My mom and I were unable to leave our apartment in Fort Lee, NJ for 3 days.

I'm suspecting, that this storm, will be similar to that one.

Not clear how much NYC will get, but it could be over 20 inches. 🙁

I dont know if this means anything.. but..

The snowfall totals for "Tonight" on www.weather.com seem to have been lowered from 8 to 12 inches.. down to 5 to 8 inches.

Its not clear how much snow is on the ground now. It doesnt look like much is falling from the sky at the moment.,

Right now it more looks like blowing and drifting of whatever has fallen.

However, there seems to be a heavy band of precip over the ocean near NYC, that is headed inland, so
perhaps the snow will really begin to pile up.

It will be interesting to see what the final snowfall totals are.

See - global warming is helping already....DOH Still, be safe everyone up there, don't be like us idiots down here in Georgia when it snows...

They said that as of 9am, La Guardia Airport had 11 inches.

Such isnt THAT far from me, but, its not right on my doorstep either.

I'm not sure exactly how much we have here. I plan to stay in today, and hopefully get out by tomorrow

Will you get a total inch report by the end of today? It sounds like NYC got a lot less than expected.

Indeed so. Only about six inches in Central Park, below average for a Nor'easter this time of year.

I didnt realize it was only six inches in Central Park, mils. Thats much less than expected.

My guess is that we got more than that here in Queens. I'd say something close to what they got at La Guardia, probably between 9 inches and a foot of snow. It was still a lot less than they priginally said.
