WMV Files On Win'98

Downloaded some WMV files.

Can't see them on Win'98

Downloaded "Windows Media Component Setup Application"

Tried to install it

Got a message

"Windows Media Player 9 Series" (MS-Dos name: MPSETUP.EXE)

"This version of Windows Media Player can be installed only on Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows .NET Server"

Do I infer properly that there is no Windows Media Player for Windows 98 ?

Is there a version of that will install on my Win'98 machine ?

go to update.microsoft.com and download win98 service pack 2 which is equivalent to Win98SE, then the wm9 player should install properly.

Never could find the page with that service pack on it. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

The closest thing I came across was this page...

...which has media Player 7.1 and Media Player 6.4 for download (among several dozen options, but the list is neat, orderly, and obvious; a strange and welcome change in Microsoft's generally prevailing web design philosophy).

They say that MP.7.1 will install and work on Windows'98.

I'll see how that turns out in real life over the next few days.
