Yahoo Groups Closures

Hi, everyone. Recently Yahoo Groups has closed down several clean, well-run adult groups for unspecified violations, with no explanation to the group owners.

Although I have not had a problem with any Yahoo groups I own, I have decided to begin migrating some operations to our backup site, http://smartgroups.com/groups/wildcatandvalerie

*This group currently has NO tickling content but lots of free space for videos and photos, so I would like to encourage anyone who is interested to post tasteful F/m or F/f tickling material 🙂 I have also created a secondary site for extra file space if it is needed. (Please be forewarned that the site contains a lot of graphic trample and foot domination content.)

Thanks, Valerie. Yahoo has deleted one of my groups, and I think about migrating the material, too. Your hint about smartgroups is highly appreciated, I will check them out.

Just an idea...

I've noticed that there are a lot of great people in our tickle community who has a Yahoo type of group.

If you guys got together and pitched in a few bucks a piece you could get your own dedicated server. I would recommend our current hosting provider who is ServerMatrix.

They have some very good rates, and you can get a server as low as $59/month with no setup. Now if you're going to be pushing a lot of traffic like this site does then you probably want to upgrade from that package to the next level. For example this site is running on a 2.4Ghz celeron with 1Gb ram to support all our traffic. (averaging 30Gb daily)

If you don't expect that much though you can probably get by on the $59 server just fine. You'll just need to get someone who knows how to manage a webserver with something like Webmin since they don't come with a free control panel.

As I said, it's just an idea. If you get a few people then it won't cost that much at all to set this up.

Thanks for the advice, TT. I'm afraid that this option is not available for me. Like many other Yahoo-users, I'm practically a computer illiterate and have no money... :umm: Apart from that, I think that server-sharing needs a close cooperation between the sharers, or at least a clear contract.

Anyhow, I'm grateful for all suggestions to get out of yahoo's crappy service fangs!

It's a good idea, TT. Maybe a few people could get together for some sort of shared hosting package. I mean, 6 people sharing a server would only pay $10 per month and that's barely more than what I pay for my web space.

Yeah it's not a bad deal considering you get a 1,000 Gb of bandwidth along with that. You just need someone to install webmin to manage the webserver easier, or upgrade to Cpanel for $20 more per month.

Cheap and dirty webserver control panel. It's not pretty, but it works. The price is right too...free. 🙂

I too have been looking for expansion room. My four free Yahoo-style sites have a combined 7,000+ unique members, and we are always full to the limit on photos and video clips. Alas, I am flat broke, and a computer newbie with only a humble Celeron laptop and a horrendous dial-up connexion, so it would be a challenge for me to work with a standalone site.

Another alternative for people who need a good message board but don't need much photo/video space is MSN Groups, http://groups.msn.com. I use it as our primary message board across the four sites, and it is usually trouble-free. However, they allow only 3 MB per USER of photo/video uploads, with a 1 MB per video size limit, but unlike Yahoo, they preserve the original size and quality of photos 🙂

Smartgroups has been having a LOT of technical glitches lately, like problems with the sign-in page. Still, I have never heard of their arbitrarily deleting groups, and unlike Yahoo, they do index adult groups.

Whoa TT that makes my head spin! Looks amazingly complicated! Gives me horrible flashbacks of trying to set up a client's web store and wading through mounds of ugly PHP! Too techy for me! *falls into a seizure*
Still it's a good idea though and definately something I'll consider if there are more people interested.

wow...I've got similar just on my desktop (actually designated as a workstation, and not a home type PC)...a 2.8Ghz Intel P4, with 1Gb of ram (and wanting more).

this is interesting...is there a Techie section here in the TT community we can post things like this to? like asking ?'s and such, so as not to spam up other individuals threads?
