on my hummingbird feeder....grrrrrrrrrr there must be dozens of these bees swarming all over my hummingbird feeder on the front porch...i can't tell what type of bees they are ..... but they are keeping the hummers away...i have two more feeders out back..no bees there...hmm going to have to take down the feeder after dark and spread vicks vapor rub on it, that keeps them away...but i can't open the front door...you can hear them swarming like mad bees...

ok that might seem a silly post to most..but i don't want to get stung..i wonder if they are honey bees..hmmm..

Raid is a beautiful thing. Doubly effective if used in conjunction with a lighter.

Gah! I hate bees more than any other insect out there. Anything that buzzes around and stings people is not cool with me. I appreciate their honey-making skills, but that's about it. I feel for you, Izzy. If you can't get near them without being in danger, you might want to call a professional.

yikes....that sounds a tad dangerous...i might accidentally fry a small hummer...hmm hummer stew...o bad bad izzy...tsk tsk tsk...grr

Adam ya i know what you mean..and i've only been stung once my entire life...by a wasp two summers ago..the damn thing dive bombed me at a cabin..i went inside and said.."David David i've been stung, what if my throat swells up?" since i had never been stung before i was sure i was deathly allergic...so i sat down and began hyperventilating...waiting for my throat to swell...David calmly came over with some benadryl...so that blew the i've never been stung in my life excuse for good..grr...o and it hurt like hell lol

If you have a bee swarm in front of your house, you need to call the fire department and arrange for it to be removed professionally. Swarming bees can be very aggressive and are dangerous to people and animals.

I agree with the whip-woman on this one. Not from personal experience...one of the perks that comes with living on an island...but National Geographic hardly lies about their stuff. Bees seem like really scary creatures, when the issue of hives and swarms are involved. Perhaps the professionals may be the better option to choose.

Either that or a concentrated laserbeam gun...but the pros are probably cheaper and less likely to burn a hole through someone's mailbox by accident. 😉

In any case, I hope the issue gets resolved without any more painful stings.

I once had a swarm of honeybees decide to swarm in a neighbor's back yard while they were holding a garage sale.

(They didn't even buy anything either...)

BTW, I wonder what the scoop is on the so-called "killer bees"?

As far as I know, all wild honeybees in the Western Hemisphere have interbred with the original African "killer bees," so they are more aggressive than honeybees of past decades.

well i went a bit overboard by stating there was an actual hive..it just seemed that way the other day...they are beginning to slack off...we are just waiting to see, as honey bees are facing extinction..i thought maybe they were actually yellow jackets, but hubby said no, he knows yellow jackets personally...having stepped in numerous nests in the past..lol...poor thing..

If they are yellow jackets, you can run to Lowe's/Home Depot/local hardware store and get yellow jacket traps to hang near it. They work real well. Might work for honey bees too...

well david the expert says they are honey bees...when we came home from walking yesterday a bee got in the house..i had been looking out the window and saw this bee crawling up the window...i of course did what all good wifeys do...i yelled bee bee bee...hehe...he came over with the fly swatter..banged that poor sucker to smithereens..and told me it was a yellow jacket..soooooooooo i said..those are yellow jackets then? he said no..yellow jackets are more aggressive..sighs..anyway the feeder is gone..i re ordered a bee resistant hummer feeder...i have two feeders out back..no bees are bothering those..

ahh much ado about nothing you say...but it's therapeutic to watch hummers fight, swoop and dive bomb..defending the feeder..and they are so damn cute..

If they're honey bees, there's a good chance they're escapees from a keepers, as most of the wild bees are mysteriously disappearing.

As an example, there's a long median between the two-lane highway along the way to the college I attend, and it's literally covered in wild-flowers during the spring/summer months, but I have yet to see a single bee out there this year. It's really rather eerie if you ask me.

they are honey bees...david said one landed on him yesterday..he got a close up look...i just found one in my laundry...gesh..

Yeeks! Yeah, I'd do as Ms. Valerie advises and call the authorities first. They'll know if there's been any local hives breached. If so, the keepers would probably be thrilled to come out there and bring their bees back to the fold.
