Are the emperor's personal guard sith warriors or just froce sensitive elite soldiers?
Dave is correct. The Emperor's Royal Guardsmen (The chaps in the long crimson robes) were the best of the best among the Stormtrooper Corps. Royal Guardsmen even served among regular Stormtrooper units part of the time, when not assigned to to the Emperor's presence, in order to keep their skills honed. Their training procedure is glimpsed in the
Crimson Empire miniseries from Dark Horse Comics, and while they do not appear to recieve any Force training, they are taught martial arts styles that may be of Sith origin.
Six years after his death in
Return of the Jedi, the Emperor returned in a series of cloned bodies and certain documents indicate that he did begin to give some of his Royal Guardsmen Force training. Called Sovereign Protectors, they were taught rudimentary Force skills, notably the ability to resist pain and a "Spider-sense" type instinct for danger in combat. However, they came nowhere near the level of the average Sith Apprentice or Emperor's Hand. The is revealed in the
Dark Empire Sourcebook from West End Games.
While it is not overtly stated, I suspect that the Emperor trained at least one of his Royal Guardsmen to be an Emperor's Hand, namely Carnor Jax. Jax is known to have aspired to the throne himself, and sabotaged the Emperor's clones in order to make them unstable, worsening Palpatine's madness, leading to his final death in the
Dark Empire II and
Empire's End miniseries. Jax ascended to the Imperial Throne following Palpatine's permanent demise, and displayed some Force abilities, notably telekinesis, that set him above the power level of the average Guardsman. Carnor Jax ruled the crumbling Empire for a few months before being slain by fellow ex-Guardsman Kir Kanos (a non-Force-sensitive, apparently), who sought to avenge his Master's murder. This occurs in the aforementioned
Crimson Empire.
