Greetings Phriends and Phellow Phreeks! I'm buzzed, I require amusement so I'm throwing this out there. 🙂
What would be your list of the ten albums you'd get to have with you on a deserted island? The ten you'd have to live with?
Ok, here's the catch. I've seen threads and topics like this wind up with folks listing their next ten, or "Ok, I can't make up my mind so here's fifteen". Ok, none of that. I'm curious if people can make a tough decision and choose ten if in reality they really had to. So, no "afterthought" posts or longer-than-ten lists. And, while "collection" CD's are acceptable and can count as one album, no boxed sets...that's cheating. 😉
Ok, what would My Own Self pick to fill ten slots in a mystical CD player that could mysteriously play on a desert island?
Hmmmm......
(In No Particular Order)
1) Plays Live by Peter Gabriel. No way I could pick one Gabriel album, plus...his first four solo albums were all called "Peter Gabriel", so it'd be a big pain in the ass. "Plays Live" has most of the songs I really enjoy the most, great live versions of them and a very good sound quality for a live album.
2) Misplaced Childhood by Marillion. This is a very personal concept album to me, and is still Marillion's magnum opus....well, maybe along with Marbles.
3) Operation: Mindcrime by Queensryche. Speaking of concept albums, this is my favorite. Not just "metal concept album", but conceptual album period. Musically brilliant, all-too-possible and at times creepy as hell...this may just be my pick for greatest metal album ever.
4) Anthologia: The Geffen Years by Asia. Not a boxed set, just a two-disc collection of all of Asia's work with the Geffen label, ie: the John Wetton years. Contains all of Asia, Alpha, Astra and the four new songs on Then and Now. Plus, several unreleased and B-side tunes from the most radio-successful progressive rock band.
5) Exit: Stage Left... by Rush. I wouldn't know where to begin with Rush, as they're my favorite band with a LOT of albums, all of which are special to me in one way or another. So, forcing myself to play by my own rules, I figured I'd get as much material as I could and went with two live albums. This one, from '81, pretty much covers the best of the "prog-era". The epic medley of "Broon's Bane/The Trees/Xanadu" is actually better than the studio versions of either song, and the live version of "La Villa Strangiato" may very well contain my favorite guitar solo ever.
6) Different Stages by Rush. The other live album I'd take with me. Covers a lot of the 80's and 90's era of Rush. Plus this neat collection contains an entire archive concert from 1978 as a bonus, so I'm covered on Rush as best I could.
7) You Can Tune a Piano...but You Can't Tuna Fish by REO Speedwagon. While I was always a fan, I much preferred the 70's REO, the material prior to Hi Infidelity cementing them into Top 40. This oddly-named album has always been a favorite of mine, I just dig every tune on it. A really cool, midwestern American rock sound...rock that isn't trying to fit into a genre. Just rock.
8) Girls With Guns by Tommy Shaw. Probably the most obscure and "WTF?" album on my list....but I just fucking love every single track on this album! Tommy Shaw's first solo album outside of Styx, it's one of those albums that you listen to and think "Why the hell is this album not all over the place?" Not a commercial sucess, but these ten tunes are seriously good. Why it was never a major hit I'll never know, but the extended ballad "Kiss Me Hello" might be the most haunting rock ballad you never heard.
9) ZOSO - IV by Led Zeppelin. Picking one Zep album is like picking your favorite testicle. But, in the end, sentimentality won out. I have the fondest memories of my mid-teen years, disappearing into the woods with a lil' bag o' weed and Zep IV on one of those big 80's boomboxes. Took me away from everything. "The Battle of Evermore" echoing off the surrounding mountains...pretty cool. This album is just like a comfortable chair you can always slip into. Considered by many to be the best classic-rock album of all time, and I can't say I'd argue that too hard.
10) Ok, fuck it. It's MY Desert Island Ten and I'm picking another Rush album. Snakes and Arrows. The latest, and probably best since "Moving Pictures". Intelligent, deep, insightful, technically awesome...and the most kick-ass rock from Rush since "2112".
Ok, what about you guys. Chat all you want, compare lists, moan on ones you mighta not been able to include...but JUST PICK TEN. You can do it. I have faith in you. 🙂
