Youtube downloads!

Has anyone else experienced problems with downloading from youtube using keepvid? Up until yesterday I hadn't had any problems, now though - nada, it ain't happening!

Try another service, eh? Sometimes Keepvid (And the others, for that matter) fail to work for periods of time. Usually one of these other three still does.

youtube questions

The vixy.net site seems to be the most userfriendly, but I'm still having some problems.

I was able to download a youtube file (the first time I've gotten that far) and Windows Media Player won't recognize it. It's supposedly an avi -- a format that the Media Player claims to recognize -- but my player can't handle it.

Any ideas? Do I need to put the .avi file extension on the file when I save it? Do I need a different player?

Any ideas appreciated.

Some AVI files use the DIVX codec as opposed to native Windows codecs. Grab DIVX for free at http://www.divx.com/

a new wrinkle

Thanks for the advice.

There's a new wrinkle in my struggle. The player you suggested works, but none of my clips will play properly. They look really good and play for a few seconds, and then they stop.

Any ideas? I'm beginning to feel like downloading clips from youtube is the most technologically complicated thing I've ever tried to do. I just can't get it to work and I'll welcome any help.

They shouldn't be appearing as AVI clips unless Vixy is converting them first, which it may well be doing. Try using Youtubia or Javimoya to save the videos in ".flv" format. That is the native Youtube format. The aptly named "FLV Player", available at http://www.download.com/3000-2139_4-10505954.html (Download.com), is a lightweight player that can then view these files.
