In the innocent era long before 9/11, driving home from a vacation in Quebec, I was asked at the border by a U.S. Customs agent, "What are the last three letters of the alphabet?" and I answered "Ex, why, zee." He waved me through. If I had said "Ex, why, zed," he would have demanded to see documents.
