I'd like to ask a question to the members of my studio audience, and please, be honest.
When you type the letters "LOL" into a text or chat, how many of you are actually laughing at the time?
I mention this because I often wind up IM'ing with people who are in the same area as me (Don't ask, it's one of my many quirks), and I always call them out on "fake LOL's". Then I realized I do it myself.
So what is it? Is that just something we type when we have nothing to say? Or is "LOL'ing" this new internal form of laughter?
---
I can't tell you how my educator heart weeps for the fact that I just used LOL as a verb and noun.
