NOTE: I WILL TRY MY BEST TO GO WITHOUT SPOILERS BUT THERE AREN'T ANY GUARANTEES SO IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN ANY OF THE MOVIES, BE PREPARED.
Everyone has some movie that the moment they watch it the first time, and consecutive times there on, that this movie is one that their kids and perhaps even their kids' kids should have the opportunity to watch because of it's heartwarming, comedic and life lesson value. (Maybe not necessarily that last one but I feel that it counts, even if the amount is small)
Up until recently there were very few movies that I could say without a shadow of a doubt that I would show to my kids, if I were to have any. Generally, this value for me has belonged to Disney movies and for good reason: they're pretty much chock full of the above values. One major one to this point was Homeward Bound, a movie about three house animals getting lost in the wild and having to find their way home. Well I have a new one to add to that list; a movie with a house and balloons - Disney Pixar's UP.
The first time I watched it in it's entirety, I was surprised at how good it really was because up until that point all I heard was that it was so-so; not so says I! Without giving much away, the story of UP follows a lonely elderly man named Carl who decides to go on a big adventure, taking his house which is being ballooned by thousands of balloons along for the ride. He meets several characters along the way including a young scout named Russell, a big bird named Kevin and a talking dog named Dug, all joining him on his quest to get to a remote location in South America called Paradise Falls.
The movie is very heartwarming from the outset when you first meet Carl as the movie tells Carl's story leading up to his adventure and that epilogue does a lot to explain Carl's demeanor during the crux of the movie. There are several other scenes along the way towards the finale that will warm your heart and/or cause you to jerk back tears. Of course, what adventure would be without some cute yet truly hilarious comedy and most of it comes from the nature of the characters interaction with each other. The life lesson comes toward the end of the movie and is definitely the climax of the movie. The lesson here centers most on not dwelling on the past and to always continue moving forward; a lesson I truly admire and can relate to personally.
Since I really am loving the input you amazing people have had on my other posts, I ask you again for your input: what, if any, movies do you have or have seen that would fall under this category and why?
If you haven't seen it, watch UP and let me know what you think about it.
Until next time, a bientot!
