The Atlanta Braves beat the New York Mets last night at Citi Field in NY, not far from my apartment.
It was an exciting early season game between two teams who might well be contenders for the division title or wild card this year.
The Braves look like they might have a good, young team, with some very exciting players.
While I;ve always been a "Braves Fan". I'm beginning to think that in some ways, it really was the players that kept me glued to my seat.
As people who follow baseball are aware, from 1991 to 2005, the Braves won fourteen straight division titles.
The anchors.main players of those teams were pitchers Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, and infielder/outfielder Chipper Jones.
In those years, the Braves were broadcast on TBS almost every night,
Most nights, they played such exciting baseball.
The team went to the postseason every year.
Yes, the Braves won only "One World Series " in 1995.
Yet, the Braves really were a "Dynasty"..
Former Braves manager and now Hall of Famer Bobby Cox, always talked about the
"Braves being successful over a long period of time",
'
Mr Cox is right.
The only team that can match up or claim "superiority" to the Braves.. are the 1990s/2000s New York Yankees. As those who follow baseball are aware, the Yankees won five World Series between 1996 and 2009.
The Yankees will have at least three Hall of Famers. Manager Joe Torre, pitcher Mariano Rivera, and SShortstop Derek Jeter (When Rivera and Jeter become eligible for induction, five years after their retirement).
Last night, after the Braves win over the Mets, some fans on an Atlanta Braves fan page kept saying.
"These young players look like thee young Braves who materialized into champions in the 1990s".
That might be foreshadowing a bit.
Even for Mitch.
Granted, I was only in my 20s then, and perspectives were different.
My late mother, may she Rest In Peace, could tell anyone who knew me how excited Mitch would get when the Braves played the Mets in the 1990s.
Without getting into any discussion about my personal life here, as that is not the purpose of this blog entry.
Let;s just say that times change, and perspectives change.
Hopefully the Mets and Braves will both have good seasons, and will end up in the postseason.
