Hey everyone! I just got back from Michigan and let me tell you it is one hell of a long trip. Just thought I would tell you about it so get ready.
I took off with my dad on Wednesday the 15th. It took us until Friday at 11am to get there. We slept twice along the way. When we got there we were greeted by my uncle, two aunts and a host of cousins. It was super awesome. Open up some communications with people I have not seen in over 20 years.
Saturday the 17th was our reunion. When I arrived, I realized how very few of my relatives that I knew. So I spent the next half hour introducing myself to all of them. As great as it was seeing so many wonderful people, the highlight was seeing one of my cousins that I was very close to as a kid. She came up to me and I looked her in the face and knew who she was. We hugged and she told me she was not going to come to the reunion until her mom told her I would be there. She said, "You taught me penny poker!" It was great to see her again as well as all my family. They want to do this every year so I will go back. Although am sure I will fly next time.
The rest of the reunion went on without a hitch. After many hugs and some tearful goodbyes We went to my cousins for some beer and more socializing. It was awesome. We did some remembering and talked about all the relatives that are no longer with us. Life sure is funny. The more we talked the more I realized that so much time has gone by, yet it would seem that not a day had gone by since I had seen all of them last.
The next day my dad and I went to see one of my aunts that could not make the reunion because she was in the hospital after having a knee replacement. We spent four hours there and had a really good time. That woman sure is filled with spunk. Still full of shit as I remembered. After we left the hospital we went to lunch and then back to my uncles to recover from my trip. I slept really well that night.
Monday was a day to travel around my old stomping grounds. We went through my old town and had breakfast with a few old friends. It was strange being back there. So much had changed. The town I grew up in was not nearly the same. After some good times remembered we took off to where my dad grew up. We saw the old farm house they lived in saw some places he remembered as well. We walked down his old road and met a man that knew the family. It was kind of neat for my dad. After about six hours of travel we went home.
Later that day I had lunch with a very old friend of mine. It was so great. Just remembering our old times and fun moments. After lunch I went back to home base and simply wished I had more time.
On Tuesday I had a great day. Pokey and his wonderful wife came by my uncles and we left for lunch at the Olive Garden. Much to my surprise, as we got out of the car a beautiful young lady got out of the car next to us. Pokey asked if I knew her and I sure did. He had asked Taryn to meet us for lunch. It was a total surprise. It was so fantastic. She is as sweet as chocolate dipped in sugar. We all had a great lunch and I could not have been more pleased. After a few pictures we left and said our goodbyes to Taryn. Pokey, the Boss and I went to hooters for a beer. It was surely great seeing three great people. Once again, the time was way too short.
Wednesday we took it easy. Dad and I went to see one of my aunts for a bit and then we went to another cousins house for dinner. It was a great time and I must say that I was getting tired. My dad and my uncle were leaving for home when a minor tragedy struck. My uncle was taking my dad out in his wheel chair when they both went end over end out the door. We all ran to them. My dad had a cut on his head and my uncle had one on his arm. Otherwise, they were not hurt too badly. We took them in to get checked however. They were both given a antibiotic. After this little mishap we got them home and then I took a three hour nap before heading for Texas.
As long as the trip to Michigan was, it was much longer driving alone on the way home. I got home Friday morning and after some unpacking, I went to sleep. That was good.
Well, as great as this trip was, you know what the best part of it was? The time spent with my dad. We had a great trip together and he told me a lot of things about his life. It was great to hear the stories. We bonded a bit and I hope we can take more of these trips.
Well. That is about it. I am glad to be back and I sure hope you enjoyed hearing about my trip. Take care now.
