This is why I love you so much....

Ray, my son just missed the cut for Asperbergers syndrome. He's a very high functioning Autistic who's always fighting to be "normal." This includes him going off his meds whenever he can get away with it because he actually thinks that's how normal people live. He'll be 24 in August; sometimes it's been pure hell. It'll never end, but he's doing a lot better.

You will have to be your son's advocate and sometimes even defy the school's reccomendations. They actually think they know what's best for your child better than you and your wife. You guys have rights under the law and if you ever need someone in your corner, I'm always available to you. You are now to be made privy to any information the school system has for special needs children. You might not think you need it, but trust me you will. If you don't know your rights, they'll run rough shot over you. Oh and did you know that they get more money for your child from the state based on his level of disability? You must be careful because they may do everything to pigeon-hole him and not let him advance based on his abilities and use previous testing to keep him down to get the money.

Adolescence may resemble hell for you; please feel free to ask me anything that will help you. We barely made it through; imagine how it will be with a child who has issues with social skills and might not be able to express his emotions. Be firm and consistent, but always remain loving. Don't let him manipulate you; he won't mean to intentionally, but he will try because he'll be a teenager and they all test us.

I won't take over your blog, but please know that I've been there and done that and my pain can be your family's progress. You aren't bad parents-if you were, you wouldn't have bothered to get this far.

True that! And yes you fuck up sometimes like every other good parent but it's not the individual stumbles along the way, its how you finish the race.

One of my cousins (and one of my closest friends) has Aspergers'. I remember how unruly he used to be when he was aged 10 - he's now just shy of his 20th birthday and it's astounding to see how well he's learned to integrate himself socially.
