So it's no secret that working in human services is no gold mine. I knew this going in and had a plan to compensate for that little detail. Unfortunately, things did not pan out exactly as I had hoped, and I was kind of idling for awhile, not reallly getting anywhere, and there's nothing I can't stand more than feeling like I'm stuck, not making progress or without options.
So I started thinking and realized I absolutely need a new job. The only problem is I really really like the job I have now! I like the agency I work for. I like my boss (most of the time 😛). I adore my consumers. I really was unhappy about the idea of leaving.
Then I decided to just get a second job during the day. My current job is Sunday-Thursday 4pm-midnight, so I could easily do something first shift. So I looked around and sent my resume to a few places, but none of the jobs were at all promising, or even very attractive options. The hours weren't great, or I didn't have the experience they wanted (but I tried anyway). It just wasn't going well. Then, yesterday, I found a gem.
There's an agency here called Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) and they work with children all over the county with a huge variety of issues: behavioral, non-citizens, mental health, addiction, low-income, low intellectual functioning -- you name it. So anyway, they have a position for a teacher's assistant. I'm not sure of the age range or what type of kids I'll be working with, but I don't care. The hours are perfect (M-F 8am-3pm). It's 3 blocks away from my current job. It pays more than I make now. It's full-time (at 35 hours - win!). And most importantly, it's invaluable experience.
For those of you who aren't familiar with human services, having experience working with children is gold. Healthy, well-adjusted children have the ability to drive you particularly out of your mind. Kids with issues are considerably more difficult, so finding someone willing to work with them is...challenging...to say the least. Because of that, agencies that work with children are always hiring. The only problem is every place I've encountered so far absolutely insists that you have experience working with children, which doesn't surprise me at all. They want to know that a.) you know what the fuck you're getting into, and b.) that you can handle it. So, long story short, if I get this job, gaining experience with children is going to increase my marketability exponentially in the future.
I'm stoked. I really, really, really hope I get it. I haven't wanted a job this bad in a long time, if ever. If I get this job, I'm going to more than double my income (yeah - money is a big motivator for me LOL) which is going to put me in such a better position to prepare myself for my future. So so so so so many things are going to improve for me. I finally feel like I'm making some progress towards something - I don't know what - but something 😛
