So yesterday evening I shaved off my beard. I have been shaving since I was 15 and just let the beard grow out when I was 18 because my facial hair comes in dark and thick. So for the last 6 years I have had a beard and most of my friends have never seen me clean shaven. One of my roommates didn't recognize me at first when he came in from work. He kind of did one of those double takes because something is wrong.
The reason I ended up shaving was that I made a bet with a friend about going a week without coffee. I'm on about a pot a day which is a little much. I cracked yesterday morning at about 10 AM. I had been grading papers and I needed something to stay awake. It was almost one of those habitual things you don't really think about but just do. I was in the office area so they had coffee made and I just got up, poured my coffee and then after I was halfway through it I realized what I had done. Being the guy I am, I held up my end of the bet. I'm still waiting on some guys to pay me money on winning the NCAA tournament pool and I kind of figure I am a hypocrite if I ask people not to skip out on their bets if I'm doing it to other people.
Some of my friends were making a side pot out of this and betting how many days I would last. Suprisingly I beat the majority of their expectations by making it to the 4th day. I don't know whether to find it encouraging that I made it 4 days or discouraging that the majority of people thought I would crack on day 3.
Either way, I am officially beardless for the first time in 6 years. I'm already planning to grow it back. I liked the last style I had which was a kind of short boxed look. I think I look better with facial hair than I do without but I have gotten some mixed reviews. I still have to think about it a little further, but for now I'm pretty sure I will grow it back. Either way, my face is now naked for the first time in 6 years. I will say that it was worth it to get coffee.
