So, I'm going to talk about something that happened at my job. For those of you who don't know, or have forgotten, my day job is a Process Improvement Engineer with a background electrical design, panel building, machine programming, & integration. My duties are far beyond my title, but that another story. Lol. So I was told back in February to spec out a laptop for the maintenance department, so that they could have access to machine programs for troubleshooting, make necessary program changes, etc etc etc. Otherwise, an engineer like myself would have to present 24/7. I'm base Salary so I'm not doing that... well not anymore anyway. Lol. Anyway, I'm told to do that by my superior. So I do it. I research all the software, (about 15 software programs give or take), and proceeded to customize a computer via Dell's website (Yeah i know Dell sucks but you know how companies love Dell). I turn it to my superior, he signs off on it. I take it up to purchasing. They purchase. The computer gets sent to our IT dept in Maryland. Then it gets delivered here. So here's where things go south. Now this PC is supposed to go the Maintenance dept., somewhere along the lines, it was decided that the computer would go to someone else higher up in the food chain and that maintenance would get his old one. Maintenance brings the laptop to me to set up their machine programming software and I see it, and I say "What the hell is this? This isn't what I spec'ed out for you" The maintenance guy looks at me and sayd "Those dick gave it to someone else and we got his old one." I went up front to my superior and told him. He knew about it and looked me in the face and said "I don't see what the problem is." I was speechless. Though at the time i had a lot of personal heartache and didn't want to bother with an argument, because I wasn't in the right state of mind. A few days later, I attempted to install the software for maintenance on the old POS laptop. 2 programs wouldn't install, and 3 continuously crashed upon installation. I fought with it for 6 hours before reality kicked me in the butt. I went up to my superior's office with the PC, but he was not there. I left him a note saying, "I can not in good conscience give this to maintenance". He didn't even come see me to ask why, he sent an email asking what the problem was. I gave him a run down of the technical problems, but I also stated that the problems can be fixed. Which is true. They can be, but that's not lap top back in. I stated that what I was going to say next was in regards to the incident only, and NOT directed at anyone. I'll give you the quick run down in layman's terms; I said basically that what happened with the computers was wrong. Someone took something that didn't belong them. That's wrong. It's wrong that it was even allowed. I said that if there had been some notification before hand. It would have been a total different story but there wasn't. It was done very sneakily. It's an abuse of power, because there is no way that an employee could do that to a person at a manager level without serious consequences. I said that if I just give maintenance this laptop and ignore the fact that this happened, i would be just as wrong. So I'm not going to do it. His reply: I'm over-reacting, I've got a defiant attitude and it will result in punitive measures and that I need to see HR (Human resources). My response was "Ok" I forwarded the emails to HR with a note that said "When would you like to talk about this?". So because I'm standing up for what's right, I'm probably going to get punished for it. Ironic right? I don't know. What do you think? Do you think I'm wrong? Do you think I should just let it go? Or should I stand my ground? I 'm just going to say regardless, I'm standing my ground, but i would be interested to know what you think.
