So my internship is complete bullshit. I worked my ass off for a year, for nothing.
Basically, my job is to be in charge of my little group and promote the Blackhawks, Comedy Sportz, and a bunch of other stuff going on in Chicago over the course of the year via viral marketing (basically spamming myspaces and facebooks) and throwing on-campus events.
This is only the internship's 2nd year and only the first year it's at my school. Unfortunately, though, my school doesn't recognize the internship as a student organization, banning us from throwing events on campus.
We tried to team up with the marketing club, but said club is pretty much defunct. There really aren't any groups outside of a couple sports teams because it's mostly a commuter school.
So the whole first semester was a bust as emails were never returned, questions were never answered, and people in charge were impossible to get a hold of. At the beginning of the 2nd semester, I had to nearly cuss someone out before I got a response.
We figured out that we'd have to find other venues for these events, which, actually made me happy as it would be actual experience in getting a hold of contacts and working with people outside of the school.
Our first event was going to be at a Jimmy John's near the school. Not glamorous at all, but it would be an event under our belts as the other schools teams had at least two so far. One of the girls in my group had an uncle who owned the place so we were free to use a table for a few hours during lunch.
Everything was pretty much set up, we were just waiting to hear back from the Blackhawks to see what, if anything, they could provide to people who signed up for their student text for tickets program. We were hoping for the first 25 students that signed up, they would get a free sandwich. The ice girls and Tommy Hawk were also said to show up.
Less than two days prior to the event, I get an email saying that the Blackhawks can't do it due to lack of resources and that we should team up with another school that was having an event that Friday.
I was beyond pissed because while I know things like this definitely happen in the real world of marketing and PR, canceling nearly a day prior is at the very least in bad taste.
So what I think happened, is that the woman running this whole thing is up to her chin in work. Just the other day, she had to cut a meeting with me and my team short to meet with the Olympics Committee in hopes of helping them come to Chicago in 2016. She probably waiting until the last second to get back to the rep for the Blackhawks, making it impossible for them to be ready for the date we had set. And then, flustered, she came up with an excuse for her assistant to send to us.
The thing that pisses me off, is that if I knew this was how this whole thing was going to go, I would have thought twice about agreeing to do it. I mean, it's an internship, so shit work and unpaid, but I've wasted a year of my life when I could have been working extra hours to pay for things like internet, clothes, student loans. I am hesitant to even put that I worked for this magazine because I have no experience to show for it.
We have six weeks left and on April 13th, I am supposed to give a presentation to the high and mighty execs and the president of the magazine, explaining what our group accomplished and our experience. Part of me wants to be honest and say, "You know, you really need more people working with the students, or less students interning, because you're very disorganized and rarely return calls or emails, etc." But I will probably just end up saying, "It was very difficult to work within our campus' limitations and still complete the assignments," so as not to seem as if I'm putting blame on anyone.
My presentation will have little to nothing in it unless we get all the events we have scheduled for March completed. And since it's getting later in the year, the assignments are getting harder, the events bigger. Doesn't look likely that we'll do all 3. I've scheduled a meeting with the director for next Wednesday to make sure she knows what she has to do, because emails are apparently pointless.
It amazes me how many moronic scumbags have degrees and high paying jobs.
To make myself feel better, I went shopping on Alloy.com, but I made sure it was all on clearance.
