I figured I would put this in my personal blog, so as just to air my thoughts, and not to post it on the main forum, as I'm sure most of us who live in the United States (As well as forum members in other countries, as I know this is a worldwide forum) are probably news weary with the coverage over the last five days with the situation regarding the US Election.
We all know the news networks, election call that Joe Biden will be the new President of the United States on January 20, 2021.
For the past several days, from the rollercoaster of Election Night on Tuesday, through the last several days, until yesterday when the election was called for Joe Biden, and even today. There has been almost continuous news coverage on TV and online of the outcome of the election.
As most people know, until this election, we have had three straight United States Presidents, Bill Clinton , George W Bush, and Barack Obama, who have won re election.
The last President to lose a bid for re- election, George HW Bush in 1992.
At that time, while CNN did exist, it was the very early days of the internet.
There was not this seemingly 24 hour constant coverage of an election and the goings on.
I voted for Bill Clinton in 1992. I was in my Senior year in college then.
A guy who I'm still friends with, reminded me that we watched that election in his college dorm room, saw Bill Clinton win the election, we watched George/HW Bush's concession speech, our friends and us were happy, and we all went out to a late night meal to celebrate.
The next day. I went to one of my history classes, the professor talked about it for a few minutes, and then got into the topic of the day.
While that election between Bill Clinton and George HW Bush was nothing like the election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump has been this year.
The rancor and constant coverage that has been going on the past five days.
Shows the frightening division in the United States, and the world.
Not to mention the reaction to the election results by Donald Trump.
The New York Post, a conservative newspaper here in New York City
Has a front page headline of a somber looking Donald Trump.
With a huge headline typed in capital letters.
"YOU'RE FIRED".
While those of us who did not vote for Trump, and do not like him as a person, like myself, might find such.,, humorous for .. a minute.
I'm also deeply disturbed as both a citizen of the United States, and a human being
There seems to be a growing consensus of people who are stating that Trump should concede.
People who are close to me in my personal life, who voted for Trump, have admitted to me that any lawsuits Trump has filed, and might continue to file will be in vain , and will only cause more division.
My concern looking at things from a realistic perspective is this.
What will Trump accomplish by doing this?
Will it put more strain on the politics of this country?
Will it put more strain on what is historically a peaceful transfer of power, whether a president has to leave office due to losing an election after his or her first term, or term limits due to having to leave after serving two terms, as stated by the US Constitution.
Each day, Covid cases in the US are deteriorating to alarming numbers.
I personally hope that someone in Trump's inner circle can convince him to concede, for the good of the people he was elected to serve.
I would say this if the result was the other way around, Biden had lost under circumstances like this, and he refused to concede the way Trump is doing.
Hopefully, cooler thinking will prevail very soon, and Trump will consider all people who he had been elected to serve the last three years and nine months, and put aside his own personal anger, for the good of his citizens.
