Thanksgiving was good. I always enjoy Thanksgiving. It's my favorite holiday. There's no worries about finding a gift or anything so it focuses on good food and family time. I know many people don't get along with their families so I'm thankful for mine even though some relatives are absolutely batty. 🙄
This year was my aunt Vernae's turn to host. She and her family live about an hour from us, but since I had to work that morning, my parents and I were last ones to get there. Everyone was there except the Ohioans, the Kentuckians, and Vernae's son. Nate lives in South Dakota so he could have made it but there has been tension between him and his parents since his engagement so he didn't come.
The meal was good. We had turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, stuffing, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, and dinner rolls. I had everything but the green bean casserole and sweet potatoes. Later for dessert there were a variety of pies that my grandma made. Blueberry, apple, pumpkin, and even a Danish pie that looked an awful lot like jello, but I stuck to my favorite and Thanksgiving staple pumpkin pie.
While we were there, my aunt Shereen was typing up my grandma's Christmas letter on her laptop. My grandma writes about literally everything in her Christmas letter. Everything about each of her children's and her grandchildren's lives. Jobs, trips, EVERYTHING. So she had written about my going to Michigan to visit friends I met from online. I stuck close to the truth as possible, only thing I didn't say it was a tickling gathering. Well, of course, surprised my aunt, which resulted in the usual "You gotta be careful on the Internet" speech.
Then my grandma had my uncle Klay tell me about what happened to this girl he knows, a relative of his boss, when she traveled abroad on a trip. I'm thinking "ok this is going to be one those stories that hammers home how careful you need to be on the Internet." So, reluctantly, he tells about the girl, Karin. She had been traveling throughout Europe with two friends, a guy and a girl. During their trip, they traveled to Turkey. They had been told that if anyone asks to tell them that they're from Canada and NOT from America.
Well, they had stopped at a shop and the guy went into the store. Karin and the other girl waited outside. A Turkish guy approached the girls and asked them where they were from. Forgetting what she had been told, Karin said from America. The Turkish guy went back to a group of Turkish men, talked to them, then went back to Karin and the girl. He asked how old they were and Karin responded 18. Then the guy went back to the group.
During this exchange, this old man was sitting front of the store and had overheard what that Turk was saying to the group. The old man stood between the girls and the group of guys and told the girls that they needed to leave. Karin said they couldn't because they were waiting for their friend. The old man stood between them until their friend left the store and told the trio that they had to leave, to run. So they did and when Karin looked back, she saw the old man running away from the guys. Apparently those Turks were making plans for those girls. Thankfully Karin and her friends managed to get back to their hotel without incident. 😀
It was an interesting story and a good one to learn from, especially when you're traveling abroad. But I kept thinking "What does this have to do with what I did?" It was about safety, yes, but it had nothing to do with meeting people from the Internet so it had no correlation with my trip. 😕
But that's my grandma. She sees danger so she warns about it, even if the lessons don't match up.
So other than that, it was a good Thanksgiving. Catching up with the family, it was nice seeing my cousin Shaylyn and her family. Her son Logan is getting so big and he's so cute.
And I took a few pictures, which I put up on FB, but here's a non-family pic.
Snow on Thanksgiving!
Now it's just a countdown until Christmas. 😱
