Now, I'm not a particularly easy guy to rile, unless you happen to be a religious fundamentalist or an insufferable asshole. I go through life with no major qualms, because I often figure, "life's too short to give a damn".
However, despite my amicable nature, I have one major peeve. When I am chatting to someone online, be it on this forum or indeed any other, I tend to view their profile to find out about them (for the sake of simplicity I'll refer to profile options from this particular forum, although the principle still stands elsewhere); whether they're male or female, if they're a 'lee or a 'ler, where they're based etc. And it really bugs me when they haven't filled all this stuff in.
I don't read peoples profiles because I want to stalk them. It's so I can get a vague idea of where they're coming from, why they're on this site. It's the same sort of principle which means that I'm more likely to chat with someone who posts than who doesn't - I feel like I know a little bit about them, and I have some sort of topic which I can engage them with, as opposed to the tedium of mediocre small talk (which I find a boring in real life as I do on the internet).
Talking to a person with no profile is as unappealing to me as going into a shopping centre with a blindfold on, and chatting to the first random person I happen to bump into (although I actually kind of like the sound of that, lol)
I can't understand the reason why you would not fill this stuff in. It's the online window that you give to people to find out a little bit about yourself.
I've rarely felt the need or desire to initiate contact people with people online, even on sites like this or fetlife/IC etc. Because people have read my profile/posts and consider me an interesting enough person to get to know. I know that sounds like I'm blowing my trumpet, but that's just the way it's often been.
Granted, you may not want people to know where you live - in that case, don't put your fucking address on there! I live in the 9th largest city in the UK, and my photo's are all over the forum; and yet I've not been "outed" against my will as a member of this forum. It ain't gonna happen to you.
So, (in the nicest way possible) if you're on the TMF, and haven't filled out your profile/are one of those people in the chatroom who doesn't fill out their profile, and then wonder why nobody chats to you, get your act together!
