Howdy everyone! This is my Freakin' Friday edition of TT's blog! I have a fun story to tell!
Have you seen the Movie Wolf Creek? Well, I have a story about Wolf Creek, Oregon. Not as scary but it was quite a trip.
My ex and I were driving home from Portland Oregon after visiting some friends. If you have ever been through Oregon you will know that there is a lot of nowhere out there. It is the most beautiful nowhere I have been too though.
I was sitting shot gun for this part of the trip When I smelled something like burning metal. I knew by the way the car was acting it was our alternator. I told my wife to pull over at the next exit. That next exit was epic.
Down a winding road we went, no houses, no people, just pine trees and mountains as far as the eye could see. Passed a sign that said, "Caution, do not pick up hitch hikers!" Well Duh! The car was barely moving now when we came around a small bend in the road to find one house and a gas station. This old gas station looked like something out of a bad horror movie. The sign read, "Welcome to Wolf Creek"
So, I said turn around but the car died, right in front of the gas station. The station was closed. It was getting cold and night was slowly falling. Then of course, the snow started falling too. I told my wife to get in the car and I would see if I could find something human. As I walked along the road, I heard something in the woods. I stopped and was ready to do battle. All at once a man jumped out onto the road! Looked very Grizzly Adams like but I was desperate. Looking around for a bear I approached the man. Back into the woods he went. Now I was scared. I turned to start walking away when I heard a voice say, “Are you alone?” After I put the skin I just jumped out of back on I turned around. There was the man again, this time with a young boy.
I told him what had happened and he told me to go wait by the car. So I did as instructed not knowing what to make of this dude. I told my wife what had happened and she was ready to run back toward the freeway when our man and three teen boys showed up. He told me to get in the car and put it neutral. He smiled at me and said, “Young man! Do you want to freeze out here or are you going to let me help you?” I popped the car in neutral and those for guys pushed my car off on a side road that led to an old house with a big garage. I put the car in park as he told me to lift the hood. I did as instructed and he looked for a few minutes. Called one of his boys over and then motioned me out of the vehicle.
“Your alternator is out. It is about an hour to the nearest town. My boy here is going to get a new alternator for you. Come inside and get warm.”
It was getting cold so I took I grabbed my things and my wife and I walked up to the door of the house. He told us to go on in and so we did. A very bubbly lady came into the entrance hall and was very nice. She guided us into the kitchen for some dinner. She had just made a pot of chili and cornbread. So let me fast forward. This guy ended up being a local handy man. These guys fixed the car and charged only for the part and the gas to get it. We left having met some fine people.
The moral of this story is, “Never judge a book by its cover.” And you all thought this would be horrific! It is a true story though.
Happy Friday!
