Better title: How I learned, as a child, to fear totalitarian regimes of both the right and the left
What I have in mind is very simple. An absolute authoritarian state concentrates power, all executive, legislative, and judicial power, into the hands of one person, the dictator. Anybody not connected to the dictator by blood or alliance is powerless and can be executed at any time for any reason by the secret police (by whatever name they are called, Gestapo or GPU or NKVD or ... ).
Would it really matter to you, while you are being tortured to death for the amusement of said secret police as an enemy of the people, if:
(1) the slogans on the walls all over the country touted the race/ethnicity favored by the dictator as the rightful rulers of the earth, as might be the case in a right wing absolute authoritarian state?
OR
(2) the slogans on the walls all over the country touted the proletarian social class favored by the dictator as the rightful rulers of the earth, as might be the case in a left wing absolute authoritarian state?
As a child, I knew people, now deceased, who grew up in Hitler's German Reich and other people, also now deceased, who grew up in Stalin's Soviet Union. Some were aunts and uncles, and some were friends of my parents. Many of them loved to tell stories. It mattered very little to them whether they would be executed as Jewish subhumans in the first case or as cosmopolitan bourgeois reactionaries in the second case.
