I had been having a peculiar problem lately.
Every time I stretched an arm, leg, torso... I would get these god-awful cramps. I'd get them in my legs (front and back), my torso, my feet and arms. Sometimes two at a time. It was awful.
Remembering a trick I learned in Marching Band, I started eating more bananas and potatoes for the potassium. That seemed to always work before. Nope. Not this time.
Finally, in a call back home, I asked a friend of mine who knows a bit about stuff like this. She asked about my salt intake.
Salt?
Thinking back on the past couple months, I realized that I HAD cut my salt intake which was not much to begin with.
So... that night I put salt on my green beans and potatoes and the next day snacked on a few pretzels.
Well...
Not sure if there was a connection or not... maybe I put too much salt in my system at one time... maybe it was a coincidence and I cought a bug at the same time... But I started feeling blah.
First a headache, then a stomache discomfort, then chills... I slept a hell of a lot more than I normally would and now three days later...
I still feel a little out of sorts (maybe it's just my body getting used to having salt again)... but dammit... those friggin nasty cramps are gone. I had no idea salt was THAT important in a person's diet. I knew potassium and calcium was important, but salt?
Well... now I know. And you can bet that while I'm not gonna go nuts with the shaker, I will definitely make sure I get a dose of salt every day even if it comes from a little poured into the palm of my hand.
Salt... who knew?
