So I'd been having trouble with some of the articles I'd been writing for folkwax so I called my editor up. As a newbie, I was nervous calling this veteran of a writer in his "office" and so on.
But it was amazing. He gave me so much awesome advice my head feels ready to explode. I felt like William Miller calling up Lester Bangs.
The group I'm doing my next piece on is totally not my style. They are old and as my editor put it "archaic" folk. He compared them to The Weavers so I'll be sure to look that group up. He laughed and told me "Kid, you're young. Don't be afraid to fall on your face. If you can't have fun with writing, what's the point? I won't let you make an ass of yourself."
I am so lucky to be writing for this site, that gets over 160,000 hits per week and is the largest subscription based publication of its kind in the field, including print. I'm doubly lucky to have this guy as a mentor.
I'm also lucky to be so young. I have no preconceived notions of how things should be, especially with mediums like print and music changing so quickly. He warned me about getting stuck in a rut and advised me to use my youth as an advantage.
I'm excited about my writing and my future. Things can only go up from here.
