After being hosed by the good folks at MySpace who bought Imeem.com and completely screwed it up, I have been taking the advice of some folks here and testing other music sites. Most are streaming music sites that while they do cater to a specific genre are seemingly nothing more than online radio stations. This is not a bad thing by any means. However it is not what I was looking for. I have a wonderful stereo here in the den and accesss to a great variety of music over the air.
I was looking for a site with a wide assortment of music from when recordings were first made to present day with ease of access to all the styles and genre's of music possible. A place where I could listen and compare the same song done by different artists with the goal of legally sharing the music...and if I liked the song or album enough to search for the exact thing I wanted on Amazon or eBay. Things were looking bleak for a while.
Then up pops Venray, the Grand Old Man of the TMF, with one short and precise sentence to perhaps aid me in my quest. "Ever hear of grooveshark?" Now who the hell would name a site grooveshark and was it like a small mom and pop website that rarely if ever gets updated or any attention at all for that matter. grooveshark? You gotta be kidding me.
grooveshark.com was the answer! It has every type of music you can think of by just about everybody who sang the same damn song. And it lets you replay the song to your hearts content. It gives you the album title and sometimes the date recorded. After a few weeks really giving this place the once over I can confidently say I would recommend this site to anyone searching for that song stuck in your head and you can't remember the title or artist who did it. The search engine is simple to use and if you just give it something to go on it usually gets you where you want to be. It keeps a list of the songs you listened to plus lets you make play lists and keep track of songs you designate as favorites. I really love grooveshark.
So as of yesterday I spent about 75 bucks on Amazon ordering the old albums I had been seeking for a long time. But you have to be careful. It seems when you find that song or artist another vague song pops into your head and you go looking for that one too.
Thanks Ray, I owe you one.
