Yesterday I posted two short clips of Diane Keaton getting tickled.....twice! From the movie "Looking For Mr. Goodbar", about the singles bar scene in the late 70s. My whole life, those two ticklings have been burned into my brain. To this day I get butterflies in my stomach when I watch them, actually BEFORE I watch them! In fact, just considering them, like now! Once I've watched them, she echoes in my brain for days. That's all I can hear.....that scream of laughter.....and before that, helpless giggles of protest.
But aside from her amazing reactions (two distinct reactions, I might add), there's something about the situation.
Richard Gere's a guy she picked up in a bar and had a night with him. Now he has stood her up for a 6:00 date. She goes out, rather than stay home and sulk. When she comes back in the middle of the night, he's there. She's super pissed......and so he just jumps onto her bed tickles her. When that doesn't work, later on in the scene.....he runs over and attacks her again.
I could only do that if it was this kind of situation. I don't think I usually tickle a girlfriend if she's pissed. When your mate is pissed, they're pissed. But I know I've done it when I've been in "scoundrel" mode, someone I don't LOVE....I might not even LIKE......but one that I'm drawn to anyway and am lusting for. It becomes "ah shaddup, I'll give you something to squeal about.. !"
I once went out with a girl who was really into rabbit rescue. That was her cause. And it was cute. Except that's ALL she talked about. Ad infinitum. Writing letters to congressmen. Showing me pamphlets. Showing me a children's bunny book that she had started. Talking about the politics and drama between the people in the rabbit-rescue community. Now...she was easy to tickle into a giggling mess! I had no compunction about that at all. And also tickling her while she's showing me stuff, making her break her running patter, incessant ....very satisfying!
"Stoooop! I'm trying to show you something!" lol. "Will you stop?!!!!"
I once tickled the crap out of a girl I found out was a Republican. Though, to be fair to her, I was prepared to pretend to be a right winger, had she said she was to the left, she was going to get it anyway. I made her say "I'm sorry". And then I made her say it again. I had her right under her arms, she wasn't going anywhere.....
If I was tickling a girl I didn't care about............it was easier to be merciless! I think part of it is the anger within myself.....I don't WANT to like her, I don't want to be drawn to her............but I am, and so it's very satisfying to tickle the crap out of somebody like that.
When Keaton first gets attacked, she immediately breaks into these helpless giggles, you can tell she's still mad, but she's being made to laugh. How could she break so easily?
It's because she wants to break, isn't it? Same thing with the next sequence.....she's gone back to being mad (which starts up as soon as the first tickling ceases....) and so, when she comes out of the bathroom, having changed.....stone-faced and angry.....he runs from behind, wraps his arms around her and sweeps her off her feet....the surprised cry of laughter that comes out of her.......from the moment he touches her...maybe it's just me....devastating. She's been waiting for him to get her out of this mood....and now he's done it.
I once had an acting teacher who was droning on and on about character and motivation and all the stuff acting teachers talk about, in this case it was about interaction between actors.....and she said "....and if we're not giving you what you want....tickle it out of us! (pause. looks around the class) Tickle it out of us!"
I have NO idea what she meant to this day. Was she being literal? Was she saying use that as a physicality? Or was she being metaphorical? I have no idea. But I like to think that's what Gere was doing in these scenes......that maybe Keaton didn't even have an idea he was going to do that. Probably not, but man oh man, I'd like to think so.... he took the acting teacher's advice and he "tickled it out of her".
