I checked with the customer service desk for US Air and was told my bag had been placed on the wrong plane in Kansas City. When said flight arrived my bag would be delivered to the hotel. Fine, says I.
We left the airport and headed off to Genos for a proper Philly cheese steak. After lunch, we went downtown for some sightseeing.
After finding a spot in a parking garage we walked north on 6th Street towards 6th and Chestnut Street, where Independence Hall stands. It was very hot and humid that day and several of us had already broken a sweat. When I saw that magnificent and hallowed building in person for the first time I stood there in awe and despite the heat felt a shiver throughout my body. I thought of the great men who walked those very halls, and the decisions they made that changed the course of history.
We arrived too late to get tickets for the full tour but were able to visit one of the wings. Then we made our way to 6th and Market, home of the Liberty Bell. Walking over to 4th and Arch Street we came to Christ Church Burial Ground. I stood at the foot of the grave of one of my heros, Benjiman Franklin and his wife Debra. Their daughter Sally and her husband Richard Bache lay next to them and Franklins long time business partner, David Hall, rests on the other side of the grave. A number of famous people share the grounds.
Walking south we passed Franklin Court, where his house once stood. Sadly, it was razed in 1812 and little is known about it. We did not have time to visit the current building which houses some small museums.
In Part III, arriving at the hotel.
