As you all know or have probably figured out by now, my name's Nicole. Despite how freaking popular it was in the mid-80s, meaning I knew dozens of girls named Nicole, I love my name. Most people dislike or even hate their given name, but I love mine because I love what it means -- Greek: the people's victory or victory of the people.
Growing up, my name of course got shortened to Nikki. According to my mom, she tried to spell it Nicki, but I was a stubborn child and insisted it be spelled Nikki. I don't remember that, but it stuck and I'm kinda glad I was stubborn about it because I like the way Nikki looks when spelled out. Lol. Ok, maybe I'm a little weird about that, but whatever. 😛
So anyway, to my family and to my friends I have always been Nikki. In school to the teachers and most of my classmates I was Nicole. By middle school, I wasn't keen on being called Nikki. I felt I had outgrown that nickname, though I knew my family would still call me Nikki no matter what. However in school, I didn't want to be called Nikki anymore, but I still wanted to shorten up my name so I started writing Nik on all of my homework, essays, tests, everything.
It took a bit for it to catch on, though I only had one teacher actually call me Nik instead of Nicole. I prefer it over Nikki. To my family and my friends, I'll always be Nikki, but I don't think it suits me.
I dunno, maybe I'm being a little weird for even blogging about it.
