From tonight, through Labor Day, or a bit after.. I won't have my favorite out of town distraction to keep me busy every night.
That, of course, is a man named Jim Gardner.
Mr Gardner announced on last night's 6pm news that he has a torn tendon in his elbow, and that he would be having surgery today to repair it.
Between the recovery, and the rehab, he said he will be out until after Labor Day.
There was strong reaction from the regular viewers of Action News.
When you watch someone for a long time, they become like a part of your life.
To me, Gardner is almost like.. a sports announcer that one watches for decades.
Gardner recently marked his 40th anniversary of working at WPVI.
I have watched him, both on TV when I lived in Lancaster, from the early 2000s, and now online for the last four years, since I moved to NYC.
I think .. it's because I value history, and watching Gardner has been a part of my life for such a long period of time.
I consider my watching Gardner, similar to being a fan of an out of town baseball team.
Like my good friend milagros who lives in NYC, and is a Dodgers fan.
I also know that Mr Gardner is 68 years old, and that he could retire at any time.
I know that I, and all of the fans of his newscast, hope that he is on for many years to come.
For now, I wish Mr Gardner a speedy recovery from his procedure.
I will miss watching him the next few weeks, as I know will all his viewers.
I look forward to his return.
