the history channel is just called History now. I don't necessarily understand why it is just History, but at least it's still pretty interesting.
anyway, there was this show about pirates today, and I decided to write about my stance on pirates. I like pirates. I think they are a cool part of the culture of the world. I used to build their ships and stuff with legos, and there are lots of great stories about pirates. I especially like the movie Hook, with Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook (I am Rufio, by the way). I also especially like Muppet Treasure Island, with Tim Curry as Long John Silver.
I'll probably lose a few friends by saying this, but I don't think that the Pirates of the Caribbean movie trilogy was that amazing. yes, they were entertaining, but there was so much going on that it became more than just what's interesting about pirates, which is looting and killing each other and being outlaws. I think they became too lovable. but I don't want to talk about those movies. there were a few things that I learned about pirates today that I figured I'd share.
One of them is the fact that there has never been a documented pirate treasure map found in the world. ever. all of the stories that involve treasure maps are just fictional. which is fine by the way, it's just interesting. I mean, when everybody is out for their fair share, are you really gonna let your captain just row to shore and bury it all away?
another aspect of the above little fact is that pirate ships were one of the first forms of true democracy. It was one man, one vote. The Pirate Captain didn't have any real authority except for in times of battle and looting, where he was to be obeyed at all times. however, when it was just happy sailing day, he didn't really have any proper control. On one particular ship, in a span of two years, the boat had 12 different captains, because they kept voting who would do a better job until they got the right one.
yeah, there are lots of other cool stuff about pirates that I didn't mention, like Blackbeard's smoking horns or how Bart Roberts came to be. but I definitely think that the movies' recent popularity made the notion of pirates come out a little manipulated.
oh yeah, Laughing Gas did a cool video with that same girl as a pirate captain, so is the whole pirate thing legit in a tickling fantasy? totally! especially with Keira Knightley involved. but no peglegs. and no hooks either. yeesh.
I'd say we can allow parrots. and toucans too! anyone remember Tukano? great stuff...
