Last night, Tickle Emperor managed to score box seats for the Toronto Maple Leafs closing home game for the season. They were playing the Philadelphia Flyers and played a solid game. Ultimately, it wasn't enough as they lost 2 - 0, with the first goal on a penalty kill and the second empty net.
Big deal. Shite happens. Philadelphia's fighting for a playoff spot and Toronto's been out of playoff contention for about a week now. No big loss.
The last home game of the season, the team goes to center ice and salutes the hometown crowd. A way to say thank you for sticking with us through a less-than-memorable season.
I was the only one applauding them. And I'm a Senators fan (rival team to Toronto). Their fans booed them off the ice at the end of the season.
I don't understand the sports fan mindset. These guys play their hearts out, do the best they can, survive the slings and arrows of the media and they still get booed by their fans. Like I said, it's been a forgettable season for TML, but that kind of reaction is unnecessary.
I'm well aware that these guys get paid a ridiculous amount of money to play, but that brings a solution: stop going to the games. If fans don't like the product on the ice, don't pay money to see it. Ultimately, the bottom line at the top of the team gets affected and management is forced to make a change. If fans keep buying tickets to a mediocre team, management has no motivation to change it.
But that's the point, isn't it? This is Toronto. These are the Toronto Maple Leafs. Every game sells out, regardless of how the team is doing on any given year. Same with the Raptors. Same with the Argos.
The fans keep paying money for a mediocre product year after year. If you don't like it, that's fine, but it wouldn't hurt to show a little class.
