So yesterday the majority of my viewing region of Ontario got our first snowstorm of the season the night before, yesterday and last night consecutively. It constantly amazes me how unprepared people can be for such weather, especially when it had been mentioned ad nauseum in the papers, on the weather channels and on the radio that we were going to see anywhere from 10 cms to 25-30 cms of snow in under 24 hours. People were also fully aware that there were 60 km/h winds, gusting up to 90 kliks in some parts, that create lovely snow squalls and visibility was pretty much zero.
Apparently I mistyped when I said WERE when I should have said SHOULD HAVE BEEN aware... All of that knowledge didn't stop a cavalcade of drivers from losing control of their vehicles and getting them ditched or into other objects or vehicles on the roads. In this here town of mine, over the last couple of years in particular, we've had snowfalls 3 times this amount happen in less time and over this winter I am sure we'll have lots. So why is it that, even with all of this knowledge, people are always so damn unprepared for that first snowfall? IT'S DECEMBER PEOPLE, IT'S SUPPOSED TO SNOW!!!!
At my work last night our mall parking lot doesn't get plowed until the overnight hours because of businesses but even with the snow on the ground it is still easy to navigate through, and I drive a Civic. Well apparently several vehicles had issues with the snow with the funniest being one of the new Cadillacs, with more than enough power to trudge through the snow if used properly, completely and utterly helpless. Now for this I equate it to driver knowledge or lack thereof, but when you need help from 4 people to get your car out of only 5-6 inches of snow and you still almost spin out once you get out of your rut and moving... you have a problem.
For those that choose to read my jumble of thoughts for a blog post, what is the funniest/stupidest instance you've seen or experienced of drivers and that first snowfall of the season?
I'll give the snow credit where credit is due: it looks very pretty... that is until you find those multiple sets of tire tracks leading to various big holes in the ditch, some of which have random pieces of vehicle sticking out.
My name is Josh, we just had our first major snowfall and it's the same as every other year: a clear demonstration of driver stupidity!
Cheers
