It took a while, but I have to say I've become a fan of the chat room.
I'm a real low-key participant, but in terms of meeting new people it has all the elements of being at a party without the need to stand there nursing a drink if no one's talking to you.
I'll see who's online and check profiles to see if there's anyone who I might have something in common with, and occasionally send a note. If they're interested or disinterested it can be pretty easy to tell, so you just say good-bye and sign off, no harm done.
And maybe because the risks are so low, I tend to get approached more often. It's led to some fun chats or even role-playing in private. A lot of times I'll just log into the chat room, then open another window and look through new posts. If someone approaches me while I'm looking elsewhere, great, if not, nothing lost at all.
