We've got a generation now who were born with semiequality. They don't know how it was before, so they think, this isn't too bad. We're working. We have our attache' cases and our three piece suits. I get very disgusted with the younger generation of women. We had a torch to pass, and they are just sitting there. They don't realize it can be taken away. - Erma Bombeck
The women in my life, however insane they may be, have effectively given me one piece of advice that has stuck with me since I was a child. That was to always be more proud of my intelligence than my appearance. Beauty fades, fads change, and beauty will only get you so far, and even then, will you have really earned what you got?
Realizing the inequalities there are in life, all of them, but particularly the inequalities with men and women, it is amazing to me the amount of young women still resting on their laurels. There seems to be an overwhelming amount of women totally unenthusiastic about educated themselves and it's rather disheartening. Considering women could not even get their own bank accounts without a man until the mid 60s and that women were the last to get the right to vote, it's amazing to me that some young women believe being dumb = cute.
People are going to read way too much into this and think it's some subtle way to insult people on this forum. To be honest, I just saw a quote I found that articulated how I'd been feeling for some time now.
In Illinois, women make only 71 cents for every dollar a man makes. I've heard it's because women are afraid to be assertive, afraid to be seen as a bitch, etc. How sad that women care so much what their male counterparts think of them, they are willing to allow themselves to be treated unjustly.
I refuse to fill the mold of what defines a woman as what we've come to know. Emotional, delicate, docile. No thank you. I am quite determined to be hard-working, sharp-witted, and perhaps even a pain in the ass if it means getting ahead and treated fairly in life.
Over time, my hair will turn gray, my face will lose it's youthful roundness, but I'll still be able to kick ass in a battle of wits.
