Why do I always write in here late at night?

Seriously, I have no fucking idea. Anyway. Time for a normal blog entry totally devoid of the mind altering effects of a certain green drink.

So. What's happening in my life? Not much; I'm actually trapped in Bowburn at the moment. Tropical-style rain over the past few days. Normally, I actually really like the rain. However, when it first came down I was out in it for five minutes and I looked like I'd jumped in a river. Literally.

Now, the river is flooded and I cannot get into Durham. Bit of a pity, last few days of my bus pass. Grr. Phil smash.

Well, Phil smash next weekend. Got a thing up in Bamburgh - any of you passing through there next weekend (like hell there'd be any of you doing so but what the hell) should come along, and you should say hi. Then I could say I've met someone from the forum. Also, you'd get to see people do hideous things to me with various pieces of blunt metal, and occasionally me doing the same back. And that's always fun 🙂

Worked out something concerning that. Problems I'm having with not knowing my weapon when I'm using an axe are attributed almost entirely to the weight - it's stupidly heavy. Will be grabbing a lighter one at some point around October if I can - there's an annual re-enactor market down in Coventry that we always go to. Also hoping to get a new helmet there, a spec helm - they look like badass incarnate. And, you know, if I had a helmet that fitted me better, it'd be nice. Current one makes me look like a mushroom or something. You might get pics one day, never know. But yeah. Spec helms. Looking for something along the lines of this:

Just hopefully a bit cheaper than the one they're advertising... even if it IS fitted perfectly, almost £300 is far too much to pay at the moment. Though if I'm going for October, and have a birthday around there, all might not be lost. Hm.

Hopefully, over the next weekend I'll be able to pick up a few really nasty knife techniques for use the weekend after when I see one of my mates from Scotland. He's the kind of person who will quite literally hold a knife to your throat when you turn your back on him - though he hasn't tried to pull that kind of crap with a sharp yet, only combat blunts. I've already got quite a bit of nasty stuff lined up, from Judo-style locks I'm going to try and get one person to teach me more of to switching knife hand mid-attack to stupid stances barely anyone uses because they're really defensive and insanely hard to attack with.

Knives are probably the funnest weapon we use 😀

Sadly, with the "no dual wielding or offhand weapons" ruling that was put in place under the new regs, I can't pull REALLY nasty stuff... I was thinking on how to improve one of the stupid stances, and realised that there's only one way to attack it. And that way is totally voided if the person is dual-wielding. Damn safety rules 😛

AAAnyway. Moving on from stuff that will potentially interest very few of you, I've been playing a few really old computer games recently. Shogun: Total War for one. Really old, really interesting to play - if nothing else, to see how much RTS games have evolved. I'll say now, I'm not a huge fan of the Total War series. Prefer stuff like Dawn of War (love the game, LOVE the 40K fluff etc) and Age of Empires. But still. Under Shogun, there's a lot of weird and fun tactics I've been able to pull out. When I first got it, aged about 13, I was crap at it. Lost every time. I'm winning everything now until the CPU starts metagaming and attacking quietly when I have the speed slider right up 😛

Sadly, it's quite unbalanced. Maxed out army of the worst troops in the game with as many bonuses as I could pile on absolutely annihilated a decent, well balanced army for example. Though, numbers are always nice.

Also started playing Lego: Rock Raiders again. Basically an unrealistic mining sim, where you control the... for want of a better word, the army of a bunch of miners who ran out of fuel near some random planet. I say army, because their basic plan is "rob this planet of all it is worth."

By force if necessary.

The denizens of this planet tend to react pretty violently, so you end up sending search teams through the caverns armed with lasers and stuff. It's basically really brutal armed robbery, because you end up literally cutting down swathes of monsters with mining lasers and stuff. It's actually a pretty messed up game when you think about it 😛 Entertaining, but messed up.

Old games are often the best, really. Back before good graphics did NOT equal good game.

One older game I can't quite get into at the moment, though, is TESII: Daggerfall. Just... gah. Can't work the camera properly. My own fault really. Be nice if I could work out how to use DOSBOX properly; sadly, I have to use the Alt commands for : and \. Seeing as it's a text based interface, this is problematic. But yeah. Really involved character creation, I'll definitely give it that 😛 Just wish I could maybe double the window size... if anyone out there has some experience with DOSBOX, and knows how to, help would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone knows whether it's possible to write .bat files for it or something, it'd be great >.> Have to mount a drive every time I want to play.

Anyway. Before this devolves into me talking about needlessly technical computery stuff, I'm going to sign off; feels like it's plenty long now anyway 🙂

Night, all. Take care.
