Anywhere you go on the internet you will find trolls. It's an unfortunate aspect of online life. There are some people who will join a forum or go into a chatroom and just say whatever they want to get a rise out of people. Maybe they actually believe what they say or maybe they just say it to get a negative response from people, either way if you respond negatively to them, they won.
I've been on this forum for over eight years. In the past four years, I've seen trolls come and go. I've seen the trouble some have caused. Heck, someone tried to ruin the beginning of a friendship between me and another member. There will always be that troll that'll flame a thread, so responding to those flames will only makes matters worse.
The Troll makes an inflammatory statement. You respond harshly to it. He responds harshly back to your response. And on and on it goes until the mods come in and delete that fighting or lock the whole thread. Guess who wins when that happens? The Troll who started it in the first place because he got the negative reaction he was looking for. He thinks you're an idiot for starting shit over something so stupid in the first place.
If there's one thing I've learned over the past few years is that the ignore list is a fabulous thing that we all should make use of. If there's a member whose posts upsets you more times than not, do yourself a favor and put them on ignore. You don't have to see any of their posts ever again. It's not worth the potential flamage that'll happen because you got mad or decided to fight fire with fire. All you do is make an ass out of yourself, especially when you resort to insults. Everyone already knows the Troll is an ass, but you look like an ass when you stoop to his level. Just ignore him. Don't let his comments provoke you into provoking him. Act like the adult that you are, ignore the provocative posts, and report any violations. If anything, it'll help better our community.
