I think I've alluded to the fact that I am being trained in to take over as manager. Hopefully all will go well and I'll be able to take over in about a year and a half.
I have worked at this convenience store for 4 years now, which is amazing considering I never once thought I'd stay here. My plans when I started there were to go to college, earn a BA in English, and go on to law school. Unfortunately things went south for school, but I also became comfortable working where I was and my plans changed. It wasn't what I wanted, but I'm happy where I am.
For as long as I have been working there, I have seen many people come and go. There have been good employees and bad employees. Currently we have a good crew. When I told my boss, Kay, that I would take over, many of my coworkers thought I would do well as manager and that it would be a good thing.
I had given it a lot of thought before I told Kay I would do it. The one thing I still worry about is, will I be respected as boss? I know most of my coworkers will, but two of them give me doubts.
Recently I was being relieved by Tori. She was still talking on her cell phone when she punched in. I told her before I left that she should wrap up the conversation because we're not allowed to talk on our cell phones when we're working. Unless it's emergency. This wasn't it. I told her as nicely and gentle as I could, and she nodded, smiling, saying that she would.
Today I learned from Kay that Tori complained to her mother, Kandie (who also works there), about me telling her to wrap up her conversation on the phone. Kandie then complained to Kay about what I did and that she had told her daughter that she didn't have to listen to me. Kay corrected her saying yes she does have to listen to me.
Kay has said many times before that when she's not there that I'm in charge. If I tell someone to do something, they are supposed to do it. I couldn't believe that Kandie would complain about me telling her daughter what to do instead of scolding Tori for talking on the phone when she was working. How dare she tell Tori that she doesn't have to listen to me! It pissed me off that she would do that.
It's just so damn frustrating.
