My mom's sister Carrie is married to a total jackass. From the first day we met Mike, no one in my family liked him. He is a loudmouth, obnoxious asshole. Seriously the first time he met my family, he tried to joke with my mom's other sister Jane, calling her an ignorant slut. I didn't hear him say it, but he tried to pull that joke again the next year at Christmas. He had drawn Jane's name for Christmas and he thought was being funny by writing on the gift "To: The Ignorant Slut".
I. Saw. Red. I chewed him out and he tried to explain that it was joke, that he got it from an SNL skit (a parody of the "Point-Counterpoint" segment of 60 Minutes) between Jane Curtin and Dan Aykroyd. In the skit, Curtin would present the "Point" portion first then Aykroyd would present the "Counterpoint" sometimes beginning with "Jane, you ignorant slut" to which Curtin would reply "Dan, you pompous ass." I've seen clips of the skit; it was hilarious.
However, in my family's case, seeing the look on my aunt's face, it was not a joke. My aunt Jane looked as if she had been slapped. If she had been laughing and giving as good as she was getting, then it wouldn't have been a problem. But she wasn't laughing, she was hurt. Mike just laughed it off, acting as if it was no big deal.
And the messed up thing was, instead of coming to her sister's aid and tell her husband that he crossed a line, Carrie got mad at me and threatened to leave. And instead of defending his wife, Jane's husband Bill just took me off to the side, praised me for standing up for my beliefs and that he wasn't doing anything because he'd go to jail for beating the shit out of Mike. Bullshit! The alcohol he constantly consumes killed the Bill I used to know. The old Bill would have knocked Mike on his ass.
Anyway, it hasn't been pleasant getting together with my mom's side of the family anymore. We haven't celebrated Christmas with them since that incident (2007).
Last night, Carrie called my mom, upset because Mike was drunk and was calling her all kinds of names and he was breaking things. Apparently their marriage is over, but Carrie doesn't have the means to leave. She has no driver's license, but my mom told her if she needed her, she and my dad would go and get her and she could stay with us until she'd get back on her feet.
The way it sounded, my mom could hear Mike yelling in the background. He was calling Carrie a whore, a bitch, all sorts of filthy names. He was also breaking things, which concerned my mom because one) it could escalate into him hitting her and two) my mom didn't want Mike breaking anything Carrie got from their dad.
Well, eventually, Carrie called the cops, which I think was a good thing because like I said, if he's breaking things, it wouldn't take much for him to go from that to hitting her. So he spent the night in jail and now that he's sober, things are good again.
Also apparently this isn't the first time Carrie and Mike have gotten into it. My mom talked to Jane and she has said that Carrie would call her all the time, crying because Mike was doing what he did last night. Jane got sick of it, hearing about it and having Carrie do nothing about it so she started ignoring Carrie's calls.
So yeah, I'm worried about my aunt. Worried that things will turn physically abusive, wishing that she'll see Mike for the asshole that he is and leave him.
