"A'ite, kid," said Vince. The six-foot-plus black man smiled politely at Sinthia, then turned his attention back to her foot. With him looking away once more, she could drop the act and clench her teeth. "Just got a couple more letters to go."
"Yeah? Gee, that's all?" she asked, trying her best to sound tough. "I was hopin' there was more!" Her Brooklyn accent was somehow even more acute than normal, and the burly tattoo artist just shook his head as he put the needle back on her sole.
Turning it on, he began slowly drawing the outline of a "C" right in the crook of her arch. The black line went in smooth and curved, led by his skilled hand. On the other end of the girl, though, things were different. She gritted her teeth and tried not to shout out loud or shake around.
In the next room, separated by a piece of glass, watched Sam and Isolde. Sam's devious grin was huge, while Isolde was quite nonplussed.
"She's putting on," Isolde said in her unplaceable Commonwealth accent. Her brow furrowing, she looked to Sam, then back. "She's has to be! She's complaining that much about a tattoo?" Folding her arms, she watched in complete disbelief.
"Yeah!" Sam shot back. "Awesome, isn't it!?"
"It's just a tattoo..."
"Not everybody is covered from head to toe, kid," Sam remarked to the fellow Dark Damsel. She tugged at Isolde's strangely normal shirt, lifting the short sleeve to show off more of the teal-haired South African's ink.
Isolde just shrugged. "Their loss," she quipped. "Oh, look!"
What she was calling attention to was Sinthia's response to Vince making the final touch on the "E" in the word "vice." The needle clicked off and Vince stretched his arms over his head with a yawn.
The pale girl took several seconds to calm before answering. "Oh wow, that's really... Ah... Good to be finished with!" Wiggling her toes, Sin scrunched her feet a few times while Vince yawned again.
"Finished?" he asked good-naturedly. "I've still gotta get the color in!"
