Regarding all numbers as representing something geometric has its drawbacks. They refused to work with negative numbers which held back their development.

Seriously, it kept them from writing down one forumula for all quadratic equations.

For example, they had to write the equivalent of x^2 + 4 = 5x instead of x^2 -5x + 4 = 0, since to them -5 was not a number. This kept them from doing algebra easily, and they never reached the level of solving the general cubic.
