Well, after today it's that time of year again, the All Star Break, and being that it is, I felt it timely to post a thread about the whole matter of the All Star Game determining home field advantage for the World Series.
Personally, Mr Bud Selig, your mandate that the All Star Game winner should have home field advantage in the World Series is ridiculous. The All Star Game is an exhibition, plain and simple, and, while I understand the idea of wanting to make the game more "significant", I dont think that basing something as important as World Series home field advantage on an exhibition game is just, or fair.
I thought that the old system which existed was fair. Alternate league home field for the World Series each year, thus giving each league an extra home game every two years, and thus balancing out the chance to win the Series.
Or, if that system doesn't work, at the very least, structure it like they do in the NBA or NHL, where the team with the best record, regardless of league, has the home field advantage. This way, this October, if, say, the 95 win Cubs meet the 93 win Red Sox in the World Series, the Cubs are rewarded for their better record throughout the season, with the extra game at home.
I read a large article in my local paper this morning about this whole "All Star Game-World Series tie in". They interviewed several players, and those interviewed said the current system doesnt work.
Baseball's collective bargaining agreement expires in 2011, so the All Star- World Series current system will run at least through that time. Hopefully, after they go about the business of avoiding another lockout or strike, they can go about fixing this very flawed aspect of Major League Baseball, and devise a plan that is at least fair.
Thoughts?
