Of course you keep this system under passworded lockdown, and possible encrypted access, with a wipe program on failure.

A very honest and practical, albeit facetious, answer.

I very much disagree with this. So long as people continue to take the "I dont care if I am being watched all of the time and a log of it kept forever" or the "if you're not doing anything wrong you shouldn't care" mindset, things will only continue to get worse. It is scientific fact the personal privacy is important to a healthy life and subsequently the enrichment/progress of society. With that said, it does not take scientific studies to recognize the harmful aspects of feeling constantly monitored. Why should anyone be okay with some other person / organization basically monitoring your every thought and way of life, and keeping indefinite records of it.

I assume you mean that to get a major credit card you need to supply your social security number.

I agree it is annoying, but sadly the credit world chose poorly back in early days, tying ones credit rating and history to the SS#, and thus today it's become a mandatory part of asking for credit. You are basically taking out a revolving line of credit loan when you open a credit card account, which is a pretty serious financial obligation. The creditor wants to be able to see your history and past, and thus requires the number to look it up. It's just how it is.

However you CAN by pass the issue with pre-paid 'load' cards. You can get several sorts at Wal*Mart's Targets and other big retailers. You give 'em cash you get a piece of plastic that acts just like a credit card for that amount. No SS# needed, but a little less handy to use.

I hope you are just being facetious; but a more practical solution is to stay at home, boot up a live linux distro from dvd, temporarily change your systems mac address (macchanger is very easy to use), route your web traffic through SSH, TOR or use some sort of encrypted tunnel and download your clips to your a hard drive that is protected with full disk encryption. Tor even has its own browser.

The cool part is if you learn how to do all that stuff, you just developed some skills that help protect your privacy online without having to drive all over the country to do so..
