I'm having a comedy shortage at the moment and looking to broaden my horizons a little. Can anyone recommend me a decent comedian? I've listed a couple of the ones I listen to for an idea of what I'm already into, and to get things started.

My favorites:
Daniel Tosh
Demetri Martin
The Whitest kids U know
Mitch Hedberg
Jim Gaffigan
Zach Galifianakis

If you want to name a couple of your favorites (sans Dane Cook) and add a Youtube clip or two, that'd be great.

George Carlin, Bill Engvall, Ron White, Chris Rock, Lewis Black, Robin Williams, and Chris Tucker.

I have alot

George Carlin , Kevin James , Robin Williams , Lewis Black , Jeff Foxworthy , Bill Engvall , Ron White , Larry The Cable Guy

My husband and I are MAJOR stand-up fans and spend much time at our local FunnyBone; we've both thought of pursuing it as a career and he probably will :). We have many favorites, most of whome we've seen live at least once: Eddie Izzard, Adam Ferarra, Mitch Hedberg, Omid Djalili, Patton Oswalt, Dov Davidoff, Godfrey, Greer Barnes, Elvira Kurtz, John Pinette, Maria Bamford, Louis CK, Bill Burr, Lewis Black, Amazing Jonathan, Jeremy Hotz, Hal Sparks, Demitri Martin, Zach Galifianakis, Christopher Titus...this list would get way too long if I listed everyone we love. And the classics like Steve Martin and Woody Allen and Carlin and Hope and the Smothers Brothers, don't start me...

Nobody has mentioned Bill Hicks yet? Shame on you all!!

Most of the other comedians I like were already mentioned, so I won't be redundant. However, you could go back to old school and listen to some Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor

I didn't count Bill Hicks because technically I don't know him yet, he's literally on my to-do list of comedians to explore. I discovered him through Brett Butler's autobiography and he seem amazing :)

I grew up listening to my mom's Richard Pryor albums, along with Bill Cosby, Moms Mabley and Lawanda Page (AKA Aunt Esther) and Dolemite (good lord, Dolemite  :bwahaha: )

Bill Hicks (ya beat me to it Slacker) - hands down my favorite of all time.
Eddie Izzard - very close second.
Wanda Sykes

And many others already listed and several others whose names escape me at the moment.

Larry the Cable Guy just grosses me out though. I can't watch him.

LOL @ Bella and the Smother's Bros. That brings back some awesome childhood memories. =)

You seem to like the weird ones. Cool. These guys aren't so much stand-up comedians as they are just entertainers, but I like the use of comedy as social experiment and vice-versa, and suspect you might, too. Consider Tom Green ("The Tom Green Show") and Jamie Kennedy ("The Jamie Kennedy Experiment").

Tom's done some interesting stuff, including mounting a piece of "art" (a piece of corrugated aluminum, as I recall, that he dubbed "Tiger-Zebra") in the National Art Gallery of Canada where it remained unnoticed for days, and taken the stage at an open mic, making only loud, obnoxious noises to see how long it would take before the audience stopped laughing and he was escorted forcibly offstage.

Jamie's the only person I'm aware of who repeated Stanley Milgram's famous social experiment, though Jamie's done it under the pretext of entertainment. It definitely raises some ethical questions, but interestingly, comedy doesn't seem captive to them.

As far as genuine stand-up, I like the classics: George Carlin, Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor and Robin Williams (and Steve Martin! Thanks Bella -- hadn't thought of him!), then Lewis Black, Chris Rock, Patton Oswalt, Ron White (though I wish he were more prolific), Dane Cook, Louis CK... There are tons I have yet to give a listen myself, though.

Jeff Dunham hands down.

Daniel Tosh, Patton Oswalt, Eddie Izzard, Mitch Hedberg, Demitri Martin, Nick Swardson, George Carlin, Dane Cook, and Lewis Black. :D
If I had to pick an absolute favorite out of all of those, I'd probably have to say Patton Oswalt, with George Carlin and Daniel Tosh immediatly behind. Funniest guys around (minus Carlin, of course. :( R.I.P.), without a doubt.

Robin Williams and Bill Cosby I've seen in concert and they are well worth the price of admission.

And no one has mentioned Dennis Miller...but I've always been a fan of his from his SNL days.

To Name A Few :

- George Carlin ( obviously )

- Dana Carvey

- Dave Chappelle

- Chris Rock

- Steven Wright ( can't believe nobody mentioned Steven Wright yet )

As far as the current world of stand-up, Lewis Black has to be my favorite...

Growing up, some of my favorites included George Carlin, Bill Hicks, Dennis Leary, Bob Nelson, and Bill Cosby among others.... But I must say, living in the deep south I would wear out my tapes of Jerry Clower's storytelling... Never felt like he was the best stand-up routine, but certainly an incredible storyteller and the one who really began my love and respect for comics.

If you can find any, I'd also recommend Redd Foxx, Don Rickles and Bob Newhart. Yes, the same Bob Newhart from tv. He had a very dry humor that was actually pretty funny. Also, I support Woody Allen, which was mentioned above. His stand-up was fantastic.

AHHH how could I have forgotten Jeff Dunham or as Peanut says " Jeffafa Dun-ham"

DOLEMITE!!! YES!!!

Never heard his actual albums, but I've seen his movies and heard his raps, very cool. I have an early Rudy Ray Moore collection of r n b songs from the 60s with a live show included. He's quite the cut-up with the audience during the songs.

Drew

If you want old school, how about Red Skelton and Victor Borge...though Victor is known as much for his musical talents as for his wit. Steve Allen, Mark Russell, Sinbad and others could also be added to the list.

And, it appears that good old Barak is quite the comedian as well. That doesn't surprise me in the least. :)
