Bassists

John Entwhistle - The Who
Showcase track: My Generation
Reason: Any idiot can keep a four beat and supplement it with flourishes. John made up his own musical tracks to complement the rest of the band.

Steve Harris - Iron Maiden
Showcase track: Running Free
Reason: Another bassist that tries to break free from the rhythm section. Also wrote a considerable amount of material for Maiden.

Drummers

Keith Moon - The Who
Showcase track: Who Are You?
Reason: Manic and powerful with the ability to drive the song.

Larry Mullen Jr. - U2
Showcase track - Sunday Bloody Sunday
Reason - When in his prime, you could literally feel his drumming resonate through your body...his drumming was that strong.

(Pop/Rock)

Bassists: Larry Graham, Ray Shulman, Chris Squire, John Entwistle, John Paul Jones, Mark King, John Greaves, James Jamerson...

Drummers: Bill Bruford, Stewart Copeland, Chris Cutler, John Bonham, Simon Phillips, Phil Collins, Steve Gadd...

(Jazz)

Dave Holland, Jaco Pastorious, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Al Foster, Billy Cobham, Max Roach, Art Blakey, etc.

Bass - Tom Jenkinson, aka Squarepusher. I've never seen anyone sonically rape a bass guitar like he does.

Drums - Probably nirvarna-era Dave Grohl.

Drums: Bill Bruford, Neil Peart, Gene Hoglan.

Bass: Lemmy, Mike Rutherford, Geezer Butler, Ian Hill.

Bass: Jimmy "Flim" Johnson

Drums: Tony Williams

Fav bassist: Cliff Burton.

Fav drummer: Hmmm...I dunno. There are a lot of good ones. :idunno:

Giant fucking bass drums!

Of course, The Professor, And the Appice Brothers.

Cliff, Geddy, Geezer, and Chris Squire on bass...

Bonham & Danny Carey, no one else really close, tho there are many other great ones. I think Steve Gorman from the Black Crowes was very underrated.

Love James Jamerson's bass lines on all the great old Motown tracks. He played mainly with just his thumb. Most of the great Rolling Stones bass lines were actually played by either Keith or Mick Taylor ("Tumbling Dice").

The best bassist in the Stones was the rhythm guitarist (Keef), the best drummer was the producer (Jimmy Miller), and aside from Mick Taylor, the best lead guitarists weren't even in the band!

Bassists- Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Matt Freeman (Rancid), Les Claypool (Primus)...

Drummers- Lars Ulrich (Metallica, pre-Black Album), Derek Youngsma (Bleeding Through)... that kid from Drumline was pretty fly.

Here we go again ...

Bass:
Sir Paul McCartney ... played in some obscure 60's band????
Phil Lesh ... Grateful Dead/ Invented a Quadrophonic Bass ...classically trained composer Sounded like Liquid Thunder.:yowzer:

Drums:
Mickey Hart ... Dead's 2nd Drummer ... Studdies Percussion Instruments & Players Throughout the World ...recorded same for Posterity for Smithsonian Institution.
Charlie Watts ... Rolling Stones / Nuff' Said:cool:

If ya keep on Dancin' Ya never get OLD
BUG

bassist:
geddy lee (rush)
justin chancelor (tool)
james myung (dream theater)

drums:
neil peart (rush)
danny carey (tool)
mike portnoy (dream theater)

yes, i'm biased.

I gotta say, as a Rush fan...it's interesting to see how many people are mentioning Neil Peart, even those not openly Rush fans or dropping the name along with others far outside to genre(s) Rush is known for. Goes to show what a massive influence the man has had in the world of percussion. Then you get a bassist of Geddy Lee's caliber and throw them in the same fuckin' band? :triangle: Like Wildtime said, there's a lot more to being a truly exceptional bassit OR drummer than keeping a four beat and throwing a lot of flourishes and fills in.

Ok, so...who are mine, then?

Drummers: Neil Peart (Rush), Carl Palmer (ELP, Asia), Buddy Rich...and..umm...Phil Collins. Yeah, I really dug Phil before Genesis went pop. During the prog years, Phil was laying down some very interesting lines.

Bassists: Geddy Lee (Rush), Stu Hamm, Billy Sheehan, John Entwistle (The Who) and Pete Trewavas (Marillion).

Of course, for keeping a rock solid beat w/out any needless showing off, it's hard to beat the Cliff Williams/Phil Rudd combo from AC/DC.

And ZZ Top's Dusty Hill & Frank Beard? Off the charts. Same three guys for 40 years and they're great as ever. Incredible longevity & consistency, maybe unprecedented in any type of music, maybe in any art form.

Yeah, same as Rush. Same three guys since late '74. You don't get that a lot. :triangle:

Bassists: Paul McCartney, James Jamerson, Tom Fowler, Stanley Clarke, Chris Squire

Drummers: Vinnie Colaiuta, Terry Bozzio, Chester Thompson, Ainsley Dunbar, Richard Bailey, Buddy Rich, Billy Cobham
