But today is also the 114th birthday of Charles Chaplin, the "little tramp" of silent movie fame,.... but he was a lot more than what folks saw on the screen. A couple of years ago, a friend gave me the complete Chaplin DVD library and it was a stunning thing to watch all the way through. "Modern Times" was my favorite, but "The Great Dictator" and "The Gold Rush" were also epic works of art,........ art, not just comedy. Chaplin even composed the music for some of his movies. Did his own stunts. Blended symbolic artistic/musical interludes in with the action. And always captured the essence of human nature. If you haven't seen these films, by all means go check 'em out.
