My Son Joined the Air Force

Any of you who know me know how close my son and I are, and you know how utterly against his joining the military I am/was. But he's 20, he needs a life, travel, adventure...All the things that made me take a tour in the Marines when I was his age. Luckily, the Marines never crossed his mind. At any rate, he left for basic training yesterday in Texas, then he's off to Seattle for schooling. For the next 7 1/2 months I'm gonna miss him something awful. At the same time I envy him: His greatest adventure is about to begin. Who am I to stand in the way of that?

I read your post and I just had to tell you...you sound a lot like my own Father. I was actually going to go into the Air Force myself out of highschool. I ended up being disqualified because I've had lasic eye surgery and they wouldn't give me a waver for it. But I think from what I can tell my Dad felt all the same things you did/do. I wish you and your son both the best.
