Inspired by the following thread:
http://www.ticklingforum.com/showthread.php?t=141882

The premise is simple: make a list of any obscure artists you like that more people should know about, dodgy music you really should hate but simply can't, or any embarrassing musical preferences you have:

Roots Manuva
I love Rodney. I really do. He's what British rappers should be, from the complete lack of any attempt to ape the US hip hop culture to the big, dirty back-beats. His references to cheese on toast and West Midland High Grade are likewise endearing, and best of all the Jamaican accent he raps in isn't put-on. Well, not much. Have a listen to Witness The Fitness, Buff Nuff and Ital to get an idea of what he's about.

Mister Scruff
My username is stolen from a music producer from Stockport (or is it Stoke? I forget) who produces some of the strangest music I've ever heard, but for some reason can't get enough of, and also makes his own cartoon videos from his weird potato-stick-man animations. One of his albums is called "Trouser Jazz" which should give you some indication of which side of the field he's coming from. "Get A Move On" and "Jazz Potato" are probably the most "normal" songs he's done, and thus are a good starting point for anyone who wants to give him a listen. Be warned though, it gets weird from there on out. Words cannot describe the genius of "Fish". He also did a collabo with Roots Manuva called "Jus Jus" which is quite good.

Ska-P
Leftie ska band from Spain; my Spanish isn't fantastic but the general rule is if Hugo Chavez would say it, that's what they're singing. Paramilitar, El Gato Lopez, Intifada and Estampida are decent choons.

Lupe Fiasco
Dunno how big he is over the pond but he's not a massive name on our little island. His rapping type shenanigans are a nice departure from the usual fuckwitted gangster fare that seems to end up on the radio; Dumb It Down, Little Weapon, The Instrumental and Kick Push are my favourite songs he's done. Superstar also. And Niggas Gotta Eat is quite funny.

Faf Larage
Because French people rapping is just funny.

And last but by no means least, one of the greatest talents ever to emerge from the glorious city of Liverpool, a man who needs no introduction; ladies and gentlemen the one, the only...

Joao Gilberto - Brazillian Jazz

Gogol Bordello - Gypsy Punk

The Decemberists - Baroque Pop

Antony & the Johnsons - Indie / Experimental fronted by transvestite Antony Hegarty

Wesley Willis - Busker musician and schizophrenic from Chicago with a cult following.

Daniel Johnston - 48 year old singer-songwriter/ musician / artist. Subject of the documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston." Diagnosed with manic-depression.

Daniel Johnston - "True Love Will Find You In The End"

Snail Shell

Aphex Twin, who allows me to become a complete musical snob whenever I talk about his work. Despite it simply being mediocre electronica. I'll often mention Squarepusher or Warp Records as well during this conversation.

Drum and Bass. Any more than 10 minutes of it is self-harm, but I still love dancing to it/DJing it.

MR. BUNGLE

Mr. Bungle - My favorite band. <br>

That echo-like sound I make when I miss the toilet and vomit in the bathtub.:yayzorz:

I'm a sucker for 90's alternative. Especially bands and artists that had one hit wonders. Like...

Superdrag - They had a hit called "sucked out" back in 1996.

Harvey Danger - "Flagpole Sitta"! come on, everybody loves that song.

Primitive Radio Gods - Had a huge hit in 96 with the longest song title ever "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand."

Eagle Eye Cherry - "Save Tonight" was my jam back in the day.

SpaceHog - "In the meantime" was a huge hit.

The list goes on and on, and on...

Eagle Eye Cherry = awesome

and Streetlight Manifesto is sweet too. But here are my obscure music picks...

FAMILY FORCE 5
I'm actually listening to these guys right now. They started as a Christian boy band, but now that they've all grown up, they're actually pretty sweet. And on top of all that, they're awesome dudes. They mix electronica with crunk and create a wicked sound.

THE MEDIC DROID
Possibly the band that opened the door for emotronic bands to make their way, they're almost like everyone's guilty pleasure. They're beats are tight, and their lyrics are attrocious yet so funny.

3OH!3
Words can't describe how amazing this band is. They take the electro-crunk genre to the next level. Just go listen to them, you'll see what I'm talking about.

LIGHTS
She's amazing. Not only is she beautiful, but she's amazingly talented. I dont' know if they aired in the states, but her song "February Air" was used in a few Old Navy commercials. She was friends with me and a few buddies right when she was starting out, and she hasn't changed even though she's starting to get famous. In my opinion, she's the beginning of a new wave of pop where the artists actually have to have talent. If you haven't heard of her stuff, go check it out NOW. No matter what mood you're in when you start listening, you'll be happy after about 5 mins.

SLOWMOTIONNOISE
Okay, so this is kinda lame, but as a musician I really have to take advantage of opportunities to shamelessly promote myself. I'm not going to sit here and talk like we're more awesome than we are, but I think we're doing something unique and interesting. If any of you want to check us out, go to myspace.com/slowmotionnoise. We're kinda electronic, but we also have a rock vibe, and yeah. Just check it out. Thanks! :)

So yeah, there are my two cents worth. Also...Metro Station...yeah, they need to stop what they're doing NOW.

Throw in something about Ninja Tune and Helta Skelta and people will think you are also retro. Also Aphex Twin is not "mediocre electronica"; it's just shit electronica with a "weird noises" motif.

Drum and Bass. Any more than 10 minutes of it is self-harm, but I still love dancing to it/DJing it.

Jungle is worse on both counts. It is also, apparently, "massive".

Super Furry Animals

Woot! Best Welsh band evaire :D

Doctor Steel - A blend of just about everything, with great vocals and awesome lyrics.

Gogol Bordello

Joao Gilberto - Brazillian Jazz

Gogol Bordello - Gypsy Punk

The Decemberists - Baroque Pop

Antony & the Johnsons - Indie / Experimental fronted by transvestite Antony Hegarty

Wesley Willis - Busker musician and schizophrenic from Chicago with a cult following.

Husker Du

Good call on Husker Du!

I also like BostonTickling's 90's one-hits and others like
Your Woman by White Town
Wide Open Space by Mansun
My Definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style by The Dream Warriors

Working for a Nuclear Free City
Deerhoof

Also, the soundtrack to the movie Mongol.

I saw The Music open for Coldplay about 5 years ago.
Excellent band...reminded me of Led Zeppelin.
Wonder what happened to them?

Yea i came across them just before they released there first full length good stuff, wasnt as keen on "welcome to the north" but i havent listened to them in a longtime.

As for music i listen too

Boards of Canada - really trippy stuff has an old sound to there stuff if it makes sense kind of 70's/80's sound in there music, really nice when your just chilling out or in bed

Chromeo - Awesome electro band, cheesetastic

Oceansize - Rock band with some progressive elements too it, always a good listen

M83 - My ex got me into these guys fantastic stuff

It would have to be The Monks. They were an early 60's band who I learned about reading an interview of Jello Biafra back when I was younger...

And they played an electric freaking banjo... That is just punk rock.
