Pope Benedict XVI Will Resign, according to the Vatican on 28 Feb 2013.
Pope Benedict XVI, is the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. He has been in office 8 years.
Following the death of his predecessor he was voted in for life.
He is the first pope to resign in six hundred
years. The Pope had been complaining of bad health.
Now there is great speculation over who will replace him. This announcement has rocked
the Roman Catholic World.
It raises a question about the age a man should be when taking on the job.
Was he too old in the first place?
A new Pope is expected to be announced before Easter, March 31.
The Catholic Church is the largest Christian organization. The Catholic Church represents
over half of all Christians. Approximately one sixth of the world's population belong to the
Catholic Church.
The Catholic Church has come under much criticism in part because of
the treatment of women which includes the lack of women
in leadership roles. The Catholic Church has never allowed women to become ordained.
