Should polls be opened up for everybody?

Should non-staff members be allowed to create polls?

  • Yes

    Votes: 6 85.7%
  • No

    Votes: 1 14.3%

  • Total voters
    7
  • Poll closed .
For those curious of why it is not, the poll feature on the main community page pulls from that forum, so we only allowed staff members to post polls. That could potentially be disabled if folks want polls opened to all.

Aha! That makes sense! I think, though, nobody will see this pseudo-poll down here at the bottom.

Heeeeey... Maybe you could make a real poll! :D

I added a poll to this thread. (If we open the poll feature to non-staff, it would likely be for Advanced Members only, to reduce the likelihood of spam.)

Agreed with the above. That said,

I love The Jimmy James

Don't hate me, but I chose no. The only reason why is I think you Admins and Mod have put up a pretty good poll question. I'm not confident that it may turn out well if non-staff members are allowed to create one.

It could go either way. I've been on a board once where the populace went buck-wild when polling was opened up, and unforuntately most of that landed in the "borderline spam" area that undoubtfully gave the staff there some serious headache for the first week or so, then it sort of scaled down from there. But given enough forum restraint (and maturity?), polls can be quite a powerful and beneficial tool when used in moderation.

The biggest immediate problem I can see for a tickling forum though are like dozens upon dozens of, "Where do you want to tickle me?" and "What's your favorite spot/tool/position/scenario?" polled topics popping up like Whack-a-Mole.

When I admin'd a phpBB board about a decade ago, there was very little care given by any of us that ran it or the owner.

We didn't have a specific place for polls, they could be added to any thread at creation. Often they were topical, but we were a really irreverent bunch. You can very much see how that experience of doing that with them for so many years colored the way I interact on the interwebs. It was there that "You" became the required last entry in any poll or list.

It started as a sanity check. OP would put "You" at a random place in the poll to make sure that people were actually reading the damn thing. We also let people look and see who voted how.

I'm not trying to tell you guys you're doing things wrong! I'm just saying... We did it differently. We also allowed images without size limits in posts, with the understanding that of someone thinks it would be funny to break the tables with a 3800px wide image, then there must be some good comedy there. We did that, so I don't exactly think our methodology would necessarily be the best here.

And this was a forum dedicated to computers, programming, and technology.

Yeah.

And we were obsessed with comedy. I was an admin and constantly trolled the politics forum. It was hilarious.

All that said, why aren't images enabled?

Direct image links were disabled a few years ago to prevent unreasonably widening the page or causing excessive loading times for users on slow connections. Our version of vBulletin still displays large images without resizing or scroll bars, unlike other forum software packages such as SMF.

Regarding the present level of moderation, this forum previously allowed a fair degree of raucous behavior, but moderation was gradually tightened after months of heated arguments and trolling related to the 2004 US presidential election resulted in a large volume of member complaints.

See...

I had to deal with that crap. Everybody else at the aforementioned forum wanted to talk politics - or as I dubbed the topic, "teh porlatax" - but we created a place for that and simply sent any thread about politics, or any thread that swerved into politics, into the bin.

It's why you'll sometimes see me post "1 vote for bin."

If the place was a mush of politics back then, I probably would have gone ultra-shithead and blasted every political thread with nonsense, or one of my favorites: Posting some random word 30,000 times in a single post. It was pretty effective at ruining a thread.

(Reply to #10) At various times we have floated the idea of creating a "Hot Topics" section here for political and religious debates, but the original forum owner didn't think it would turn out well. Members have also expressed concern about the way a similar section is implemented at TMF.

I have found that politics and religion (and perhaps even sports) don't usually mix well with erotic and fetish content. Personally, I love politics, but I keep it on my independent blog to avoid creating any distractions at the TT. I usually only discuss religion and sports with a select few people whom I know well ;)
